Bank Quay Bulls 16 - 26 Thatto Heath Shields
Shields maintained their unbeaten run away at Bank Quay in a potentially tricky fixture, not helped by the opposition only having 11 players & Thatto coming with 20 boys eager to play.
Nonetheless they started the game in a professional manner with the forwards laying the platform in attack & defence, this resulted in a clever play by Matty who intercepted the ball 50 yards out & raced away to score under the sticks, which JB gladly added the extras.
Further strong carries by Jack J & Logan allowed Jakob the opportunity to target gaps in defence & put Freddie away in the corner, Fin CB was unlucky with the conversion, 10 nil to the Shields.
Thatto now had their tails up & was on the front foot once again & good play from Bobbie R & Luke and a quick pass from Scott allowed Freddie another opportunity to power over from close range & JB calmly added the extras, 16 nil.
To their credit Bank Quay came back at the Shields before half time but dogged defence kept them out with Bobby L, Scott & Jakob to the fore.
Half time was called & this brought about a number of changes, 9 in total, which unsettled the team but also gave all the squad valuable minutes & opportunity to impress.
The 2nd half started off very scrappy with errors in defence from both teams, as a result Bank Quay grew in confidence & their big forward took his opportunity to crash over for a converted try.
Thatto then started to show more of what they are about, some great attacking play & strong carries from Louis B, Noah CB & Adam set the platform for a last tackle play that, Noah CB putting a big kick in, Alfie picked up the loose ball to cleverly chip to the corner & Callum pounced on to score out wide, this time it was Olly whoβs attempt went wide.
From the resulting set Olly, who was on debut today after recently signing from Clock Face, produced a piece of solo magic with a jinking run from his own half evading would be tacklers to race away to the corner for an outstanding individual try, then to top that off he slotted the conversion from the touchline with a strong accurate kick.
Shields then allowed Bank Quay back into the game with 2 tries of their own but it was too little too late as the game finished with a well earned win for the Thatto boys 26-16.
