Earlier this year I made a decision to step back from professional coaching to work on a few other odds & ends instead once all of my clients had completed their racing seasons and their 2025 target events.

The last of these was Mathilde Pauls competing in her main event of the year which was the UCI World Masters Track World Championships in Roubaix last week. It could hardly have gone better: she competed in five events and drove home with a medal from each event and with two rainbow jerseys in her kit bag:-

Gold: Scratch Race
Gold: Team Pursuit (with buddies Charlotte, Clarry and Lucy)
Silver: Individual Pursuit
Silver: Points Race
Bronze: Team Sprint (with teammates Kristy & Clarry)

The Scratch Race was a highlight in which she attacked alone and then held off the bunch for most of the race (which was pretty rapid at around 29 mph average speed).

Mathilde worked a lot on improving her pursuit technique this year and, despite riding faster at the championships than last year, she missed the gold medal by just 0.8 seconds...

She has become a pretty formidable track rider over the past two years. That's taken considerable effort (obviously), a little courage now & again, plenty of coffee & cake rides and, most importantly, a "premium snacks"-based reward system :)

Full Moo'er Amy is in good form: as well as this 15 mile event yesterday, she recorded a big 50 mile PB a few weeks ago, second place at the Outlaw Half aquabike in Norfolk (beating most of the men in the field), some all-time power PBs, and a flurry of other strong time trial performances.

REPORT & INTERVIEW: Daniel Chambers recorded his first win of the season at the King's Lynn Cycling Club 15-mile time trial on Saturday, with Amy Sole finishing as the fastest female rider in the event near Stoke Ferry in Norfolk.
Riding for Bicester Millennium Cycling Club, Chambers set an unbeaten 32-51 to finish ahead of host club rider Richard Camp, who clocked 33-55 to seal second, while Mike Padfield of North Norfolk Wheelers Cycling Club clinched third with 34-41.
Chambers had finished in the top ten at the Northampton and District CA 10-mile time trial earlier this season, and now has a win to his name thanks to a ride which saw him finish over a minute ahead of his nearest competitor.
In the women’s category Sole (Full Moo Cycling) recorded 39-37 to claim the top prize, ahead of Judy Brown (Newmarket Cycling & Triathlon Club) who finished in 45-01.
This was also her first victory of the season after finishing a close second in the women’s category at the Ely and District CC 10-mile time trial back in May.
“It was seriously hot, and quite breezy, out on the course,” said Sole.
“Annoyingly, the traffic was very heavy and I got delayed considerably behind a tractor which was a shame as I was hoping for a faster time. But it’s about showing up and facing any challenges that come your way.”
Wayne Hill of Bourne Wheelers Cycling Club took home the prize for fastest finisher on a road bike, clocking 45-17, while in the 50-59 veterans category Andy Kennedy (Ipswich Bicycle Club - Public Information) topped the standings in 36-32.
In the 60 plus veterans field it was Nicholas Webber of CC Sudbury who crossed the line in 37-09 to finish as the fastest competitor.
This 15-mile event, run on the B15/8 course, begins on Mepal access road where it proceeds along the A142 before retracing its routes to finish at the gates of the shooting club upon the hill.

Full Moo'er Amy made the long journey to the UCI TT event at Antalya in Turkey last weekend.

As a Fenland dweller the course and conditions suited her perfectly: pan-flat and windy!

Everything came together for her: she started hard and got every watt of energy out by the finish, coming away with a silver medal in her age group and with qualification secured for the UCI amateur world TT championship next year in Denmark.

Amy trains as consistently as anyone I've ever known. She's had plenty of success in aquabike this year but this was the best time trial performance she's ever had. Terrific.

Thanks to Maglia Rosso - Cycle Shop, Cafe & Glamping for preparing her bike and to WattShop for some aero tweaks to her position recently.

I don't post much here these days unless there's some pretty significant news, but this meets the requirements :)

Full Moo'er Mathilde Pauls became world individual pursuit champion in her masters age group on Saturday. When a rider is as versatile as she is, and when they already have a long list of achievements, it's easy to think that success just comes easily.

It doesn't. Track racing, and pursuit in particular, has been a very rapid, very steep learning curve for Mathilde this year.

We purposefully didn't have any performance goals or outcome goals for the World Masters, but I secretly felt she was in with a good chance....

The best thing, though, is that there's plenty of scope to go faster next year :)

I was delighted that Full Moo'er Mike Skillings set a new British age-group Hour Record this morning at the Gosling Velodrome at Welwyn.

He covered 39.58 km (24.59 miles) as the clock reached exactly 60 minutes. Weather conditions were almost perfect at the start but after 15 minutes or so the flags at the track started to flutter and by the end of the ride there was quite a brisk breeze.

Mike's successful record attempt today was the culmination of a long project which began with a conversation back in the dark days of the pandemic lockdown in 2020. You might think that riding an Hour has a lot in common with riding a 25 mile time trial but in fact it's quite different - there's no passing traffic to suck you along, for a start!

This is just the start of Mike's dealings with the Hour though. We have more plans for 2023... 😉

Testing with a Full Moo'er on a warm day at Welwyn track. The newly built Handsling bike and aero position (and the rider's fitness!) all checked out OK... 🙂

I've been using an ancient PowerTap power meter for the past 11 years. How accurate is it after all these years of use, abuse, rainwater, and road grime? Well, very accurate, apparently.

This is how it compares with my new Favero Assioma. The example is a Zwift race from last night, and there's only 0.4-0.9% overall variation between the two power meters' readings.

PowerTap has been discontinued as a brand for a while now, but it gave access to training & racing with power at a time when the only alternatives were very expensive.

After we'd worked on Mily's road position we spent some time on her TT position too before a key time trial at the end of the season in Ireland.

She was already in a pretty good position, in fact, but there were some gains to be made from optimising her posture on the bike.

As a powerful, small rider she'll cut through the air pretty well - see how small her frontal area is, even with a road helmet on.

I did a bike fitting tune-up yesterday for talented Under-23 road & track rider Mily before she headed back to Belgium with her Isorex No-Aqua team.

She's already a great bike handler so we were just looking for anything that might give her an edge. As it turned out, we settled on lengthening her position a little.

Vee gheluk Mily.

It's mid-October, the trees are bending, rain is threatening, but none of that matters: just being able to carry out client testing on the track is fantastic in current circumstances :)

Full Moo'er Mike has been training well during lockdown. But we needed a good benchmark of where his cycling performance is at the moment, and I also wanted to know his current aero drag figures. You can't test for that on a turbo so at 6:00 a.m. yesterday morning he rode the local E2/10 time trial course. I think he saw a total of six vehicles during the entire ten miles...

And it turns out he's doing OK!: 22 mins 10 secs, 27.2 mph, 283 watts. I calculated his CdA (aero drag) as a super-slippery 0.198 - that's about the same as his best-ever run in the wind tunnel with Matthew Bottrill last year.

We haven't started any speed-work yet so things are looking quite rosy. All we need now are some races! 😀
