Marquis FC take the points from our opening game of the season.

There were plenty of positives to take from the performance, alongside a few things we know we need to sharpen up on the training ground over the coming week. Attention now turns straight to next Sunday as we travel to face Rosegarth.

The Tabard Rotherham Player of the Match: Logan Hewitt

A great performance from Logan up top. He worked tirelessly for the full 90, pressed from the front and repeatedly found dangerous pockets of space with some excellent movement.

His reward came with a superb half-volley across goal following a U4C corner, a brilliant finish worthy of this week’s Player of the Match.

⚽️Match Report⚽️

🟢🟡Horse & Jockey 1-2 U4C🔴⚪️

⚽️Ant x2

You would think that with U4C getting our first pre season victory that we could go on about this for ages but in this case, less is more. We felt in control for the whole 90 minutes and don't get us wrong, Horse & Jockey did have their chances however, we even discussed at half time that we could go up a gear or 2.

This time, we started a little quicker than usual and settled into the game, making some good passing patterns and in general being calm on the ball. This is how we scored our first goal in the first half, by putting together some nice combinations, playing a lovely ball behind their defence for Ant to run onto before rounding their keeper and putting it into an empty net.

As already mentioned, at half time we spoke about how we were feeling in control however, that we could play with a bit more intensity and turn up the heat a little. However, not long after the restart, Horse & Jockey won a free kick and with it, placed it into our box where we thought we played the perfect offside trap and their striker tapped it into our net. Yet again, we showed great character, didn't let it get to us and settled down again. Ewan was playing like a Yorkshire Pirlo, and our strikers, Logan and Ant, we're causing havoc with their intelligent late runs and link up play. For all of our probing, it wasn't some great U4C team play that helped us retake our lead. Instead, Ant latched onto a backpass from the Horse & Jockey defender, yet again rounded the keeper and rolled it into the net. Both teams did have more chances and on another day, got more goals but it wasn't meant to be.

🏆Player of the match: Ewan. He moved into CDM for us this Sunday and was genuinely class. He was brilliant on the ball, constantly threading through balls, performing great combination play and defending solidly.

Honourable mentions: There's 2 this week as we really struggled to narrow it down due to it being a great team performance.
🏅1: Ben. Ben played his first game in goal this pre season for us after struggling with a hand injury for a while. Even though Ben didn't have lots to do, when he was called upon he was brilliant. Brilliant claiming at crosses and even a wonderful diving save on what is a really tough ground.
🏅2: Ant. Ant is normally class for us every week and that shows with his goalscoring record over pre season. Ant constantly had great movement which meant the opposition defence struggled to pick him up, he made intelligent late runs to get in behind several times and even set smart and greatly timed pressing traps.

📣Coach's thoughts: We saw a lot of what we have been working on in training with getting the ball down on the deck and quick passing. We felt in control a lot of the match but we still need to be that bit more clinical in front of goal and find them extra couple of gears to be able to put teams to the sword. We won't get ahead of ourselves and we will now focus on the next game to make sure we are ready for the start of the season.

🏆Player of the match Ewan's thoughts: It was a really big improvement from recent games and getting the win was a bonus. We started off really strong creating some good chances and going into half time 1-0 up made us confident to go into the 2nd half with the same mentality. We did this by creating more chances which we couldn't convert but on another day be 4/5 goals up. Unfortunately, we conceded a poor set piece goal (clear offside) but we didn't let our heads drop and knew the next goal was vital. We capitalised on their mistakes and got the winner. All in all, a good team performance and one we can build on ❤️

We would like to thank Horse & Jockey for a competitive and spirited match. We wish you all the best for the season. 🤝

We would like to thank our sponsor The Tabard Rotherham for always supporting us and providing the lads with pizza's after the game

⚽️Match report⚽️

🔴⚫️Roseguarth fc 3-3 U4C🔴⚪️

As with a common theme with U4C this pre season, we started off very slow and was 2nd best to most of the action. It took Roseguarth to score from a scrappy cutback for us to wake up a bit but even then, we were still playing hot potato with the ball but did start to make our presence felt competing for the ball. Roseguarth then doubled their lead after their striker made their way to the edge of our box to strike the ball home unchallenged. 10-15 minutes before the halftime whistle, Nick swung in a low corner from our left hand side which deflected into the Roseguarth goal to put us 2-1 down at half time.

For the second half, U4C seemed to play a little better but still far from what we know we are capable of. Around 10 minutes into the second half, Roseguarth scored a carbon copy of their second goal. U4C were starting to get the ball down and play a bit of football and getting our head to balls.

We then had a hydration break and just like most games in the world cup, this was a gamechanger. As a collective, we decided to leave everything on the pitch for the last 20 minutes and this was led inspiringly by both James (our captain of the day) and Ewan who now was making sure the high balls didn't bounce, getting first to every ball and getting in front of their attackers. This picked everyone else up and at this point it felt like we were making chances all of the time. The pressure paid off when Ant made a great run onto the ball and smashed the ball past the Roseguarth keeper from a narrow angle. Not long after, Nick got himself a goal (no you can't claim the first one Nick) with a smart run beyond their defence and a calm finish past the keeper. 3-3. For the remainder of the game, we kept up the same intensity and showed great will to score however, couldn't capitalise on some great chances so a highly competitive game between 2 RDSL Division 3 sides finished 3-3.

📣 Gaffers thoughts: 'We started slow but still managed to compete with them but what really impressed me is our heads never dropped. We got the benefits from that as we got on level terms and could've even won it which is a great compliment to the lads. The last 20 minutes was a pleasure to watch and sets a benchmark for future games. There were lots of good performances today and I can see the improvement but there's plenty more to come from this team. We struggled to get the ball down and play the football i know we can. Progress right now is key and I can see it game by game so satisfied with that. There's more to come. UTU4C 🔴⚪️

📢 Coach's thoughts: 'Another slow start from us but we definitely grew into the game the longer it went on. I'm a bit dissapointed that we didn't really see the usual patterns of play today and never really got the ball down and played for long periods however, we did show a lot of grit, character and fight today which I'm so proud of the lads for. There will be games this season where that could win us the game itself.

©️ Captain of the day James Richardson's thoughts: Firstly, it was an absolute pleasure to be back today. For the team, I feel we paid too much respect to them and was scared bother aggressiveness. When we played football, we actually had them on the back foot. I believe the midfield played well in the first half but also made it hard for the defence to commit which is wrong on both sides. My only other negative from today was just before the water break, we dropped down a couple of levels. After that though, we all decided to go for it and thought 'let's show them what we are made of' but we do need to do that for the full 90. I don't know whether it's confidence or worry but I want the lads to know you have support from 10 others. We all fail together and never beat yourself up.

We would like to thanks Roseguarth FC for a very competitive match and we wish you the best for the season. 🤝

As always thanks to The Tabard Rotherham for always supporting us and providing some great pizzas for us after the game.

⚽ Match report⚽
Rotherham town Spartans 6-2 united 4 communities

⚽ Logan
⚽ Connor

Both teams started off rushing their play and not really being taking care of the ball. Around the 20 mins mark, Rotherham town Spartans played some tidy passes and coolly placed the ball into the bottom corner of our net to take the lead.

Our lads started to calm down and tried to get the ball on the deck which led to our star boy Kieran Cartwright unleashing a rocket of a shot which was judged to have not crossed the line after rattling the crossbar.

This helped our lads gain even more confidence but we couldn’t capitalise on any of it and Spartans doubled their lead.

U4C did themselves really proud by not letting their heads drop and kept battling which lead to a well worked goal around the box where Max crossed the ball for Logan to tap the ball into an empty net to get.

Rotherham town Spartans changed a lot of their players for the 2nd half whilst we made 1 change with Emmanuel coming on for Lucas at left back. Despite this, the 2nd half started the same as the first half with both teams battling and fighting for every ball.

Rotherham town Spartans then made it 3-1 with yet again, another well worked goal and calm and composed finished. Again, we didn’t stop and from a low corner, the ball hit Connor’s leg to drag us back into it and make it 3-2.

This is now where they say that football is defined by small margins. Rotherham town Spartans got a man sent off after dragging his foot down the back of ants leg after being warned for a number of other things. Nick did amazing to literally run the length of the pitch with the ball and was clipped in the penalty area to win us a penalty. Kieran stepped up and whilst trying to aim for the top corner, completely missed. With how good he has been this pre season he can be forgiven though 😂

All of that plus united 4 communities trying to stagger our subs so we can take another look at some lads, seemed to wake the Spartans up as especially in the last 15 minutes or so, found another gear or 2 and showed us why they are a division 2 team.

🚨 Managers thoughts: another game against a higher division team. We have taken a lot of positives away from today. The work rate was there and we are getting better but there’s still a lot more to come

🗣️ Coach’s thoughts: despite the result, we can still see clear progress. I liked that we could see some stuff that we’ve worked on in training and that we showed grit and fight. There is still a lot of work to do but there’s foundations are there.

©️ Captain of the day Connor Redmond's thoughts: good first half but we dropped off in the second. But to hold a team like we did with some key players missing and chucking a few lads in unfamiliar positions was really good. We made quite a few opportunities that wasn’t executed but all kept their heads when questionable challenges were made.

Man of the match: Kieran Cartwright
We are starting to run out of words for how good this guy is. He protected the defence, worked his socks off and kept things ticking from the middle of the park.

Honourable mention: Jamie Murphy.
Jamie was quality in goal organising his backline, sweeping everything up and making some incredible saves.

Thanks to Rotherham town Spartans for a great game and we wish you the best for next season 🤝

Thanks to our new sponsors The Tabard Rotherham for getting all the lads some pizzas after the game and supporting United 4 Communities
