Shaldon Sailing Club 2024 News update

Welcome all to the new 2024 sailing season. This coming year promises to be just as ambitious as last year with more activities planned throughout the season. There will be the Sunday racing, a full weekend regatta event and some more relaxed sailing on Friday evenings.
On the Regatta Saturday evening the Motor Vessel “Pride of Exmouth” will cruise the local area with up to 200 people on board. There will be 2 different entertainment acts including Elvis. Chris Clarance is the organiser and Elvis has been booked.

The club Soling (8 metre Olympic sailboat) is moored on the water and easy access from the beach and is ideal for taking out people who do not have much sailing experience being very stable and predictable; it handles like a big dinghy. Last season it was used both on Wednesday evening TCYC racing and it was entered in the Torquay regatta where it came 2nd in it’s class. It did also sail in a few Sunday races giving more members the chance to experience small cruiser sailing.

There are now 3 RS Aeros racing on Sunday mornings; these lightweight twitchy dinghies are great fun and well suited to agile sailors, but a little challenging when the wind gets up!

It is planned to sail on Friday evenings when the days are longer and water gets warmer. Please see here for the proposed timetable. On these evenings there will not be any formal races and it will be a good opportunity to practice and experiment with different rig settings.

Shaldon Sailing Club increased its membership last year and now there is a core of dedicated ‘windy sailors’ who like to go out when there is a chance of the boat planing. For those without their own dinghy the club has dinghies available for them to use. For a small donation these can be taken out.

Last summer in June SSC organised a Heritage weekend in June with dinghy races and BBQs throughout the weekend. Old and heritage sailboats were invited to take part in the races.

The clubhouse has 2 rowing machines which are used by individuals and local rowing organisations in the village. There are a selection of weights and benches for the more dedicated fitness minded people
