Third and final BARCH tennis social of the summer 🎾❤️

Three brilliant evenings, loads of BARCH faces, some impressive skills and another reminder that some of the best bits of BARCH happen outside the gym.

What we love most is seeing people who originally met through a class now spending their Friday nights playing tennis together. That side of BARCH will always mean a lot to us.

Massive thank you to Jo Purkiss for organising and running all three evenings for us this summer. We’ve absolutely loved them. Richmond Lawn Tennis Club thank you for the incredible facilities!

That’s a wrap on the summer tennis socials. Until next year… 🎾

Test Week at BARCH 🚀🚀 For most of the year, we don’t want you training at 10/10. We want you working hard, moving well, leaving a little in the tank and being able to come back and do it all again.

But Test Week is different. If you want to test, you’re feeling fresh and everything feels good, you’ve got the chance to properly go for it.

And the best bit genuinely isn’t the numbers. It’s the noise in the room. People stopping what they’re doing to watch someone else. Members cheering each other on. People getting more excited about someone else’s PB than their own 😂

We’ve been sent so many videos this week of members supporting each other and it’s bloody brilliant. There’s a fine line between encouraging people to push themselves and creating an environment where people feel like they have something to prove.

We never want the second one.

You don’t have to be the strongest. You don’t have to lift the heaviest. You don’t even have to test. But if you do decide to have a go, you’ll probably have a room full of people wanting you to do well.

Push yourself. Don’t prove yourself.

NEW BLOCK NEXT WEEK LET’S GO!

BARCH Postnatal starts in 2 weeks.

Small group training, with childcare in the gym to look after your baby while you train.

We don’t really need the research to tell us this. We’re seeing it ourselves. We looked back at our new enquiries from August and around 85% were from people telling us they wanted somewhere they could get stronger and put some muscle on.

Not lose a stone. Not burn as many calories as possible. Not get a six pack. Get stronger. Build muscle. Feel better. And we love that.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with training because you want to look better. But it does feel like the conversation around why people exercise is changing, particularly with people in their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond.

Strength matters. Muscle matters. Being able to do more matters. Feeling good matters. And we’re really proud that BARCH is becoming somewhere people come to do exactly that.

Over 3 years of our Run / Walk Club and we know It sounds a bit cheesy saying it, but this genuinely feels like a little family now. A family that somehow keeps getting bigger.

And the best bit isn’t really the running or walking. It’s everything that’s come from it. Friendships. Best mates. People going on holidays together. Different little groups and networks forming. People who probably would never have met otherwise, now seeing each other every week.

And we’re STILL getting new people turning up for the first time every Wednesday. We’re incredibly proud of what this has become. So please keep spreading the word. If you know someone in Richmond who wants to get out, move a bit and meet some good people, bring them down. Every Wednesday. Free. Everyone welcome. See you next week

Some people are just part of BARCH ❤️ Coach Angelica has been with us for five or six years now, and something a lot of people probably don’t know is that she was actually a BARCH member before she ever became a coach!!

Since then, she’s become such a massive part of the place. If you’ve spent any time at BARCH over the years, chances are you know Angelica. On Saturday we got to celebrate something completely away from the gym, her wedding!! And what a day it was.

Seeing someone who has been part of BARCH for so long so unbelievably happy was just the best!!

New block starts next week 👀

September always feels like a bit of a reset. Summer is pretty much done, routines come back and we get a lot of messages from people saying the same two things: I want to get fitter and I want to get stronger.

Good. That’s what we do 💪🏼

We’ve programmed BARCH in training blocks for nearly eight years. We don’t believe every session needs to be completely different just to keep things “interesting”. There should be a reason behind what you’re doing. We keep key movements in long enough for you to learn them, practise them and actually get better at them, while still having plenty of variety within the sessions.

This block you’ll see Back Squats, Front Squats, Deadlifts, Bench Press, Chin-Ups, Rows, RDLs, Presses, Cleans and more. And they’re not just in LIFT. SWEAT is strength AND conditioning. If you want to get stronger but also know you could do with improving your fitness, don’t automatically assume LIFT is the only session for you.

There are now 80+ coached sessions every week at BARCH, across LIFT, SWEAT, HYROX, Barbell and more, plus Mat Pilates every Tuesday at 8am and Saturday at 9am. That doesn’t mean we expect you to live in the gym. For most people, consistently training 2–3 times a week is a brilliant place to be.

And if you’re watching these videos thinking I’d love to try BARCH but I’m probably not fit enough yet, please don’t get fit to join a gym 😂. You don’t need to know what an RDL is. You don’t need to be able to do a chin-up. You don’t need to lift a certain weight. That’s why we’re here to coach you.

Next week is week one of a brand new three-month block, so if you’ve been thinking about trying BARCH, it’s a very good time to come through the door.

No ego. No showing off. Just good coaching, sensible training and a room full of normal people trying to get a bit fitter and stronger.

24 young people training across two BARCH Youth sessions tonight. Honestly, so good to see! We’ve spoken a lot about wanting to grow this side of BARCH, so seeing the gym full tonight with young people learning how to train properly was pretty special.

A little update from Max, Sam & Will to say thank you for all the support so far. We’re genuinely really excited about where we can take BARCH Youth.

We’ve had loads of messages and emails, we’ll get back to everyone tomorrow, promise! And please keep spreading the word. Parents, teachers, schools, sports clubs, coaches… send them our way.

Lots more to come.

Yesterday, just before the 8am session, I was standing by the door checking everyone in. Saying hello. Having a chat. Normal Saturday morning. Then at about 7:59 I looked up. 28 people in the room and pretty much everyone was talking.

Little groups everywhere. People catching up. People laughing. People who met through BARCH. People who probably wouldn’t know each other if they hadn’t both decided to join the same gym.

And it was one of those moments where I thought… this is actually really cool. Because when you’re around it every day, it becomes normal.

But gyms don’t have to just be places where you turn up, train for an hour and go home. Friendships can start there. People can support each other. You can build a whole network of people you know locally, just because you happen to train in the same place a few times a week.

And equally, you don’t have to want any of that. You can come to BARCH, train, say hello to nobody and head home. Absolutely fine.

But if you are looking for somewhere where you might actually get to know a few people along the way, this is what a normal Saturday morning looks like here.

7:59am. Class hadn’t even started yet. Probably one of my favourite BARCH moments in a while.

Kiss my BARCH 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Very proud of our partnership with London Welsh Rugby Club London Welsh RFC this season, and pretty cool to see BARCH Richmond on the kit.

A club that means a lot to us, right on our doorstep, so it’s a genuine honour to have our name on the shorts this year.

The boys kicked off their season today with a BIG win away at Jersey, and we can’t wait to welcome them back to Richmond for their first home game at Old Deer Park Sports Ground ❤️🏉

And a special thank you to Hywel Rhys Williams for doing absolutely everything in his power to maximise sponsor exposure.😍

Enjoy the plane ride home boys!!!!! 🍺 Up the Welsh ❤️🏉
