With the 1st team away to St Cadocs this evening we had New Western Park to ourselves and decided to have a bounce match for training.

We had 9 of the 2010’s up with us this evening to give them more experience being around the U20’s set up, each one of lads were absolutely excellent and are starting to adapt to the speed and physicality brilliantly.

Superb this evening from (L to R) Rocco, Kyle, Jamie, Marco, Zac, Max, Dylan, Abdallah and Dec 👏👏

Tonight’s result seen The Young Frew come away with a 7-4 victory in the cup but it was far from a classic.

1st half in the early stages of the match seen The Young Frew with plenty of the ball but everything seemed to be rushed and trying to force things which ended up losing possession on many occasions. We managed to take the lead through an excellent move finished off by Mitchell Wallace unfortunately that wasn’t to last long as we lost our shape and a long ball not dealt with resulted in West Park drawing level. We regrouped took a deep breath and started to move the ball around then it wasn’t long before two stunning team goals finished off by Mitchell Wallace with his 2nd and a goal from Niall Jamieson 3-1. Mitchell could have had his 1st half hat-trick after another excellent team move but he hit the post.

2nd half and after been told at half time that West Park would come out quick the lads didn’t seem to listen and again caught out with 2 long balls 3-3. Again it was time to switch on and an excellent Liam Ireland put us back in front with a fine finish. The Young Frew then keep pushing with Captain Jack Lapsley smashing one from distance into the top corner 5-3. We made changes and they didn’t disappoint with Kieron Bishop back in amongst the goals with a lovely finish off the post 6-3 and then our final goal came from a sweet strike from hardworking midfielder Aiden Ronaldson from outside the box also going in off the post 7-3. With minutes remaining West Park grabbed another from a long ball not dealt with 7-4.

Special mention to Liam McKenna who was involved in 6 of the goals tonight.

Mixed emotions from tonight’s game, we played superb in small doses but never really hit the heights we know we can. Game management and decision making could have been better. The goals were of a very high standard and with 5 different scorers was great to see.

Debuts for our 2 new signings Finn Nyguist and Ross McKellar both lads contributed well and also had good games.

This Friday night sees The Young Frew host West Park FC in the Robbie Meiklem Memorial Cup

The two sides have played twice before in friendly matches so this is the 1st competitive fixture between the two.

We look forward to welcoming West Park FC to New Western Park on Friday.

We would love to see as many people as possible turn up and support the lads on Friday.

1st half and what a 1st 10 minutes its was for The Young Frew side. 2nd minute of the game we won a free kick on the edge of the box and with a pinpoint delivery from Jamie Milligan Young Liam Ireland with a header past the keeper 1-0, 4th minute once again Jamie Milligan with an outstanding pass taking out both central defenders into the path of Kieron Burns and calmly puts the ball past keeper 2-0 (cruise control well so we thought 🤦‍♂️) on about 10 mins the game takes an unwanted turn for The Young Frew when a challenge Lennon Duffy results in a red card 🟥 it was his 1st tackle of the game but that was the standard of refereeing on show tonight. Anyway with a quick reshuffle we charge on and the dynamic of the game changed as we quickly realised it was 12 against 10 🫣 the lads dug in and albeit Glenvale started to have a lot more of the ball it was mainly passing between themselves at the back with no real threat going forward. End of 1st half 2-0 Young Frew.

2nd half begins very much like the 1st half apart from Glenvales 1st team CB crying about wanting his dinner which was a bit strange. Glenvale rightly so had more of the ball having the 2 man 🫣 advantage and then comes one of the best goals I’ve seen this season, Glenvale left back picks up the ball and hits an absolutely sweet strike from far out and smashes it right into the top right hand corner (take a bow 👏👏) we were forced to take off Kieron Burns after a bad challenge (unpunished) and not long after captain Jack Lapsley had to come off still feeling the affects of a bad challenge in the 1st half (unpunished) but again we charge on with the game and Glenvale make it 2-2 from a scrappy goal to lose from our point of view. With Glenvale starting to push on for the winner and our legs beginning to go the Glenvale player gets the ball inside the box and with no one coming to challenge him puts the ball past the keeper to make it 3-2, this sends them ecstatic with a Glenvale coach waiting for his glory moment to start on the Renfrew bench but with 2 minutes to go it was as if someone hit mute on the remote as he went completely silent 🤫 A sweet delivery from a free kick from Niall Jamieson finds vice captain George Niven to put the ball across the line 3-3 and that’s how the game ended.

Although Glenvale had the extra man and 1st team playing from our point of view and the atmosphere in the changing room it was definitely 2 points dropped.

Excellent work rate from the 10 man Young Frew tonight but as yous know we’re hard to please and know we should have been a lot better on the ball when in possession.

Back to training Monday and we wish Glenvale all the best for the rest of the season and hope the big CB finally got fed.

The last fixture between the 2 clubs ended with a victory for The Young Frew 5-3 at New Western Park but with both clubs having changes to there squads who knows what Friday will bring. No doubt it will be an entertaining match though.
