“Have you got this one?” A small question that can start a friendship. ❤️⚽
There’s something special about a physical card collection: a folder to share, doubles to swap and something to feel proud of.
There’s some interesting science behind those experiences too:
Friendships support children’s wellbeing. A shared collection gives children something to talk about, a reason to approach others and an opportunity to build friendships.
- Choice, achievement and belonging matter. Research identifies autonomy, competence and connection as important psychological needs. Choosing what to collect, learning about the cards and sharing an interest offer opportunities to experience all three.
- Collecting involves thinking skills. Checking a checklist, organising cards and planning swaps involve memory, attention, comparison and decision-making.
- Shared interests bring people together. Research into children’s collecting identifies connecting with family and friends among their reasons for collecting.
- Physical cards offer time away from screens. Children can sort, swap and enjoy their collection at their own pace — with something tangible to look after and remember in years to come.
For me, non-league cards add another connection: children can watch the players in their folders, cheer them on and proudly show them their collection after the game.
Collecting isn’t a mental-health treatment. But it can create opportunities for friendship, achievement and belonging — and those little moments matter.❤️⚽
