Dear all,

Here is the latest received regarding PLC. Please voice.
First of all..what we need to know more about…
who are these developers? Don’t have much of a track record. Is it a base for yet another housing scam in the name of PLC?

The council has begun a formal, statutory consultation on the application for development of the Purley Pool site. Please respond to this . It is not clear exactly for how long the consultation is open but it is probably best to reply in the next two weeks.

The link to the application page can be found here: https://publicaccess3.croydon.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=details&keyVal=S9U0INJLKLR00

The summary of the application states the intention as the:
"Demolition of the existing buildings and er****on of buildings of 5 to 12 storeys to provide a leisure centre (Use Class F2), commercial unit (Use Class E), an Integrated Retirement Community comprising a mix of Specialist Older Persons Housing and Care Accommodation for older people (Use Classes C2 and C3), car parking, landscaping, and associated works"

Dear all, P - MP)

I thought that you would appreciate an update on the Purley Pool project. You will recall that the previous Labour Council closed down the pool and refused to re-open it (not even bothering to bid for a share of the £100m Government funding to re-open leisure centres after Covid for Purley).

A pool for Purley is essential – it was previously used by 11 local schools, many charities and local people of all ages. A new pool and leisure centre will also provide a welcome lift to Purley town centre. I am therefore determined to see a proper pool and facilities re-opened in Purley.

The old pool had deteriorated under Labour’s neglect to the point that it could not be re-opened. However, I am pleased to say that there is a Croydon Council Cabinet Meeting this evening (Wednesday 25th) at which I am expecting a development agreement to be signed-off between the Council as the Freeholder and the long-leaseholder Polaska to deliver the new pool and leisure centre. The project will see a brand new six lane pool, training pool, 80 station gym, studio facilities, café and car park as well a new public square and open route between the station and high street. There will be housing built on the site too, reserved for older people (many of whom will likely downsize from local larger houses, making those available for young families).

The draft plans for the site can be seen online here in an easy-to-read format: https://purleypool.co.uk/

I understand that the plans on the website above are currently being fine-tuned following feedback from local people over the past few months, and that the full planning application is likely to be submitted in a matter of weeks. The project is due to be completed in just over two years from now. I will obviously study the planning application carefully when it arrives, but the delivery of a new pool and leisure centre is clearly to be welcomed in principle. I’d like to thank Executive Mayor Jason Perry and the local Conservative councillors for their work on this project so far, which I have been supporting.

The Council paper on the project for this evening’s council meeting (11 pages) can be found here:
Purley Leisure Centre Oct Cabinet Part A FINAL 002.pdf (croydon.gov.uk)

I will keep you updated as this project progresses. I hope that this note was useful and please do keep an eye on www.chrisphilp.com for further local news.

Supporters of Purley Pool

Many of you will be aware of the recent announcement of a redevelopment for the Purley Pool site to include a new Leisure Centre. The Council is now saying that a reopening of the current pool is no longer viable and hence the announcement.

The Council has not provided details and costings as to why re-opening the existing pool is no longer viable as this was, until recently, still under consideration. It was also part of the options paper put to the Council last year and was certainly implicit in the Mayor's election pledge.

Nevertheless the proposals for a new development look promising. If implemented to time, they would deliver a new Leisure Centre to Purley by early 2026, including a 6-lane 25 metre pool, as well as regenerating the site and hopefully giving more life to the centre of Purley. There is an 'on-going' consultation and an opportunity to be involved if you wish. Please contribute if you have comments. The link to the site, which is run by the site owners Polaska, is at

https://purleypool.co.uk/

At Save Purley Pool we see the merits of the proposal, but believe it will be important for the Council to hold the developers to account for delivery of the new Centre, in particular the new 25 metre pool, to time. The last thing we want is a demolished or unfinished development in Purley. We are also aware that, even if a new Centre is delivered to the proposed timetable, Purley will have been without a pool for at least 6 years.

Save Purley Pool has signed up to be involved and will be monitoring events closely. We will update you from time to time as we hear news. We will be focussing on the early development of the new Leisure Centre and pool, but hope the proposal generally can give the widest possible benefit to boost Purley Centre.

Thanks again for all your support as it has only been through considerable public pressure for a pool that we have got this far.

Please comment direct if you wish, and If you have any particular points you would like us to feed in then please let us know.

Best wishes from

Save Purley Pool

Key milestone reached for Purley Pool

Jason Perry
Conservative Mayor of Croydon
Dear Valued Party Member,

I know how disappointed residents in Purley and across the south of Croydon were when the previous Labour Council closed Purley Pool.

That's why I made the promise of a pool in Purley one of my central campaign pledges during the Mayoral Election - and I have been working to fulfil that promise from the very start of my Mayoralty.

However, it quickly became clear that re-opening the former pool would not be sustainable due to the extensive disrepair allowed by the previous Labour Council.

Today, I am pleased to announce that the developer Polaska, who have held the main lease on the site for some years, are now preparing to submit plans for the regeneration of the Purley Pool site, which will include a new six-lane swimming pool, training pool, fitness studio and gym, as well as a soft play area for children and a café.

The plans also include a later living housing development, a new public square, and shops to regenerate the High Street. Residents have often told me that the walkway from Purley Railway Station into the Town Centre can feel unwelcoming, so the plans also include improvements to this route.

The aim is for the construction of the pool to be fully funded through the development, and the Council will run and operate the new facility.

These are exciting proposals which will help to revive Purley Town Centre. We will be working closely with Polaska and with the local community to ensure that any new development is right for Purley.

I want as many residents as possible to have their say.

Polaska is hosting public exhibitions on Tuesday 20 June, from 5-8pm, and Friday 23 June, from 4-7pm, at Christ Church in Purley. There will also be a stall at Purley Fete on Saturday 24 June, from 12pm to 4pm.

Those who are unable to attend the exhibitions in person can visit the consultation website for further details on how to get in touch with the project team. https://purleypool.co.uk/

This is an exciting time for Purley, and I look forward to working with the community as we regenerate this vital facility which the previous Labour Council neglected for far too long.

With best wishes,

Jason Perry
Conservative Mayor of Croydon

To Purley Pool Supporters

Please attend the meeting at Christ Church, Purley on May 16th at 6pm, with Mayor Perry to show him that we need Purley Pool (Leisure Centre) re opened.

Mayor Perry pledged as part of his election campaign to re open Purley Pool if people voted for him to become Mayor. Many people voted for him because of this. Since becoming Mayor over a year ago, Purley Pool has not re opened and Mayor Perry has not fulfilled his promise.

We are told the council has no money. However the council receives sports funding and has found an additional 82k to pay Mayor Perry per year.It also receives funds from all the new buildings in the area which should go to community infrastructure projects such as Purley Pool. Due to his staff and election costs Mayor Perry has already cost us an additional £402,382. Money that could have re opened the pool.

Please attend the meeting on May 16th at 6pm with Mayor Perry and remind him that he promised to re open the pool. We want action. We want the pool open.

Please feel free to make posters to make it clear we want our pool re opened. Save Purley Pool.

Tickets for the question time event with Mayor Perry are free and can be obtained via this link below or you can just turn up. Christ Church address is:
