Back to campus! 🎓✨

This week we welcomed our BA (Hons) Fashion Design students back to the University of Portsmouth for Induction Week.

It has been wonderful to see the studios coming back to life — welcoming our new students as they begin their fashion journey with us, while also seeing lots of familiar faces returning and getting ready for the year ahead.

A week of introductions, conversations, inspiration and reconnecting — and just the beginning of another busy and creative year of designing, making and experimenting together.

We’re also back on social, so keep an eye on this space as we share more of what happens in our studios, our students’ work, projects and life on the course throughout the year.

🚶‍♀️🌿 Walking, fashion, research and new ways of learning

We’re delighted to celebrate Victoria Jowett, Lecturer on BA (Hons) Fashion Design, who will be presenting at this year’s The Walking Multilogue: Decentralising and Dehierarchising Learning and Teaching in Fashion on 30 September.

The international programme brings together 33 leading walkers facilitating 20 walks across four continents, exploring how walking can open up new approaches to learning, teaching and research in fashion education.

Victoria will be sharing how walking has shaped and influenced her own research practice, contributing to an international conversation around alternative, place-based and embodied approaches to fashion education.

We’re very proud to see research from our Fashion Design team contributing to conversations about how and where fashion learning can happen. 🌱🚶‍♀️

We’re incredibly proud to see our super lecturer Julian Roberts Subtraction Cutting invited as a Keynote Speaker at Patterns That Shape Our World: Shaping the Future of Sustainable, Ethical, and Technological Fashion – Practice and Pedagogy, hosted at Manchester Metropolitan University. 👏

Julian will be joining Dr Holly McQuillan from TU Delft as one of the conference’s keynote speakers, bringing together educators, researchers, industry and practitioners to explore the future of pattern cutting, sustainability, technology and fashion education.

A huge thank you to all Year 10 students who visited the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries yesterday to take part in Gel Plate printing workshop by Rachel Homewood. It was fantastic to see everyone experimenting with colour, mark making, textures and pattern to create wonderful unique prints. Fantastic Outreach Taster Day at the University of Portsmouth! ✨

It was wonderful to welcome students from schools and colleges across the region for a day of creativity and inspiration.

Our creative workshops in Fashion & Textiles, Graphic Design, Photography, Illustration, and Architecture gave participants the chance to explore new skills and ideas. Images from the creative vinyl workshop delivered by Rachel Homewood.

A huge thank you to all the staff, students, schools, and colleges who joined us and helped make the day such a success.
