Pudsey Juniors Greens vs Pontefract Collieries Maroons
8 vs 13. No subs. Early start. Every excuse in the world… and not a single one taken.
This morning could have gone very differently.
With just eight players available, no substitutes, and a strong Pudsey side ready to test us, the odds were firmly stacked against the Maroons. When a late absence reduced us further, expectations understandably could have dipped.
But what followed was, without question, one of the most courageous and complete performances this team has ever produced.
From the first whistle, the boys showed exactly what they were about.
With the slope in our favour in the first half, we played with intent - creating chance after chance through sharp passing and intelligent movement. On another day, we could have been comfortably ahead, but Pudsey’s goalkeeper produced an outstanding display to keep them in it.
But Pudsey were dangerous too. Breaking forward with purpose and matching our intent. But every time they did, they were met by Maroons shirts tracking back, working tirelessly, refusing to be beaten.
Then came the setback.
Just before half-time, and probably against the run of play, Pudsey found the net. A moment that might have deflated many teams, including us - especially when we were already stretched to our limits.
Not today!!
At half-time, there was no panic. Just pride. Pride in the effort, the fight, and the belief that they were still very much in this game.
And in the second half, they proved it.
Chizaram struck early to level things setting the tone for what was to come. From that moment on, the Maroons didn’t just compete - they took control.
James and Charlie added superb goals, while Chizaram completed a brilliant hat-trick. Despite Dylan bravely trying to play on through injury before being forced off, and with players rotating and adapting, including Chizaram stepping into goal, the team somehow didn’t let their levels drop.
They didn’t fade. They didn’t hold on.
They surged.
But the result only tells part of the story.
With eight… then seven players, this team produced football of the highest quality. They defended as one, worked relentlessly to recover their shape, and passed with confidence and composure. At times, their movement and creativity left Pudsey chasing shadows.
Every single player delivered.
Dylan was immense at the back, making crucial interventions - including a vital second-half save, and showing incredible determination to continue despite injury.
Jasper and Arthur stood strong under constant pressure, with Arthur’s never-give-up attitude setting the tone and Jasper driving us forward with excellent distribution.
Rory and Charlie showed real maturity, managing their energy, rotating roles, and keeping the team balanced when it mattered most. One minute they were in defence, the next leading us towards goal.
Grayson and James were relentless on the wings - tracking back, driving forward, and creating opportunities. James dazzled with moments of brilliance, while Grayson’s passing and vision highlighted his development.
Chizaram led the line with tireless energy - pressing, chasing, and finishing with real quality. A complete forward performance.
There was no man of the match today.
Because today, it belonged to all of them.
Every tackle. Every run. Every pass. Every ounce of effort.
After last week’s events, this was the perfect response - resilient, united, and full of character. A performance built not just on talent, but on heart.
We couldn’t be prouder.
An early start… and now a whole day to enjoy a result, and a performance, to remember.
