Another cleanup dive at the Waterfront, Plymouth.

Approx 2m of marine litter, mostly discarded monofilament fishing line that takes approx. 600 years to biodegrade. Polyprop rope and plastics, discarded fishing rod, weights and other litter.

There is still about 8m of this one particular tangled mattress of line to come up. Still wondering why anglers do not use biodegradable line.

Another successful cleanup effort in Plymouth Sound.

This mess was about 10% of a 20+m long coagulation of disregarded fishing line that still needs recovering, one of several on the seabed. 2026 is the worst year for this to date.

Monofilament fishing line takes 600 years to biodegrade, releasing microplastics while doing so.

Biodegradable line takes 18months to degrade, why use anything else? At this rate all the anglers will ever do is snag old line.

We also released a conger and lobster hooked up on discarded line caught fast who were waiting to starve to death.

Zulu Divers are working with the The SHIPS Project to clean up Plymouth Sound.

Here's one of the reasons we remove tyres from the sea - they break down over time into small fragments, releasing microplastics and harmful chemicals. This one is so degraded that it can be pulled apart by hand. Tyres can provide shelter for fish and crabs on the seabed. Similarly, on land, used oil drums can shelter wildlife. We remove both because they pollute the environment.

Happy Birthday Zulus!

Our Plymouth dive club was one year old yesterday and we celebrated with a Waterfront shore dive.

We welcomed 40+members, did a liitter cleanup, trained some divers and enjoyed lots of swimming in the heat, all topped off with a tasty bbq.

Thanks to all for making it a great year. We look forward to next year and the Club going from strength to strength.
