After a brilliant win against Porto Plymouth in the cup, we've had a disappointing run of three defeats in a row.

The lads will be looking to put it right and avoid copying Liverpool's recent record of 4 defeats in a row, by getting some points on the board against Plymouth Hope (rain permitting!)... the joys of Vicky Park!

Ken Rickard Cup - Round One

Kings Arms 3–1 Porto Plymouth

Kings Arms pulled off a cup upset as they brushed aside Premiership outfit Porto Plymouth with a dominant 3–1 victory. Despite being the lower-division side, the Division 1 team showed quality, resilience and no shortage of belief to book their place in the next round.

The breakthrough came early as Jono Ellis finished smartly from close range after a superb cross across the box by Ben Berry. The hosts doubled their advantage when Cai Holder showed great control in the area before firing an effort off the post and in. There was a touch of fortune with a possible deflection on the way through, but Holder was quick to claim the goal.

At 2–0, Kings Arms were flying and the third arrived after another well-worked move. Holder slipped a perfectly weighted through ball into the path of Berry, whose first attempt was miss-hit, but he reacted quickest to slot home the rebound and make it 3–0.

Porto Plymouth pulled one back with a fine cross to the back post that was headed in, but it proved to be only a consolation. Kings Arms defended terrifically from that point on, looking organised, committed and even threatening on the break. In truth, they could – and perhaps should – have added further goals to make the scoreline even more emphatic.

There were standout performances all over the pitch, but Toby Halloran was deservedly named Man of the Match. Normally not a centre-back, Halloran stepped into the role after a spell away from action and was immense throughout. Some have already hailed the decision to play him there as a stroke of tactical genius from the stand-in manager.

MOTM - Toby Halloran

We wish Porto Plymouth Football Club the best of luck for the rest of their season.

Seymour Arms 3–5 Kings Arms

After opening the season with a defeat that shall never again be spoken of, matchday 2 was a battle of the Arms.

There are few venues in English football less forgiving than the windswept slopes of Staddiscombe, where corner flags bend at 45 degrees and goal kicks often end up back with the goalkeeper. Yet amid the gales, Kings Arms emerged with a first victory of the season, a 5–3 triumph which had everything from long-range artillery to questionable defending and, at one point, the opposition goalkeeper cosplaying as a tree.

Kings Arms began in imperious fashion. Goalkeeper Jake Kincaid launched what can only be described as a 150-yard cruise missile, arcing perfectly through the wind to find Ben Berry, who finished neatly into the far corner.

Moments later, Ben Berry threaded a fine ball to Cai Holder, who was gifted a goal when the Seymour keeper abandoned his post to embrace it instead. Holder, ever the opportunist, did the only reasonable thing: pass the ball into the empty net. 2–0 at the break, and the away fans (all 3 of them) dared to believe.

The second half began with fireworks. Robbie Milne unleashed a strike from distance that whistled past the despairing goalkeeper, who motioned vaguely in its direction before remembering he had no chance. At 3–0, Kings Arms looked home and dry.

Naturally, they were not. Some sloppy play saw Seymour Arms drag it back to 3–2. But just as panic threatened to set in, Jack Biscoe hammered in off the post to restore daylight. Seymour, not to be outdone, nodded in a superb header (marginally offside, depending on your eyesight), setting up a nervy finale.

It was left to Biscoe once again to calm the nerves. After his first effort was blocked, he pounced on the rebound to stroke home into an unguarded net. 5–3, three points and at last a reason to look at the league table.

Matchday notes:
▪️Ben Berry’s finish: composed unlike the next 3 attempts.
▪️Jake Kincaid’s assist: on purpose.
▪️Robbie Milne’s goal: a missile.
▪️Jack Bhandari: still running.
▪️Jack Biscoe’s brace: priceless.
▪️Cai Holder: he was… ok.

Kings Arms 9–4 Sporting Plymouth

On a blustery afternoon where the swirling wind played as much a part as either team, Kings Arms ran out 9–4 winners over Sporting Plymouth.

The hosts came flying out of the blocks in the first half, racing into a commanding 7–1 lead by the break. With the wind at their backs, Kings Arms made the most of every chance that came their way. Lew Redding was the star of the show, netting a superb hat-trick and deservedly taking the Man of the Match honours. Jack Biscoe and Cal Holder each struck twice, with Holder providing the moment of the match when he coolly lifted the ball over the advancing keeper for goal of the day. Robbie Milne also got on the scoresheet – prodding home from all of a yard – while an unfortunate Sporting Plymouth defender put through his own net.

The second half told a different story. Perhaps with the win already in the bag, Kings Arms eased off and allowed their visitors back into the contest. Sporting Plymouth took full advantage, scoring three times with the wind now in their favour, but the damage had long since been done in the first 45 minutes.

In the end, Kings Arms’ blistering first-half performance ensured a comfortable victory, though the second-half showing was a reminder that there’s no room for complacency at this level.

MOTM - Lew Redding
DOTD - Adam Brown

Final Score: Kings Arms 9–4 Sporting Plymouth

Tavistock Wanderers 0–7 Kings Arms

Boiling hot, seven goals and enough comedy moments to fill Match of the Day 2.

Ben Berry bagged himself a hat-trick, George Cordon grabbed two (including a worldie into the top corner), Zach Tiddy chipped in with one and Liam Coles smashed a thunderbolt into the roof of the net to finish things off.

Stand-in keeper Jono Ellis, normally a striker, but out injured, pulled on the gloves and kept a clean sheet in the searing heat including some incredible saves that has the normal first choice keeper panicking for his spot.

Other highlights:
Lofty Parker’s cross that hit… Lofty Parker’s other foot.

George Cordon’s shot that cleared the goal and apparently clipped a cow in the next field.

Zach Tiddy gliding around like he’d borrowed a pair of ice skates.

Matt Cory’s first game back… and a miss from point-blank range cheered louder by Ben Austin than any of our goals.

Credit to Tavistock, who kept going until the end despite the heat. More minutes in the legs before the season begins in less than 2 weeks!

Friendly - Inter Plymouth Vets 1-8 Kings Arms FC

Kings Arms delivered a dominant performance to cruise past Inter Plymouth Vets with an emphatic 8–1 victory. The away side were in control from the first whistle, despite tricky conditions caused by both the weather and an unpredictable pitch.

One of the stars of the show was George Cordon, who bagged a superb four-goal haul. Jay Hamley also chipped in with a clinical brace (he’s still claiming the own goal), while Cai Holder and Lew Redding rounded off the scoring with one apiece, capping a relentless attacking display by Kings Arms that could – and probably should – have seen them hit double figures.

Special shoutout to Robbie Milne, who ran up and down the wing like a man possessed. In conditions where most would struggle to stay upright, he was covering more ground than a Deliveroo driver on a Friday night. Fully deserved Man of the Match.

We wish Inter Plymouth Vets all the best for the upcoming season.

As always, our thanks goes to Kings Arms Pub, TimberVault and MEP Systems for their continued support.

🔏 Signing #14 - Russ Ellis

We’re delighted to welcome Russ Ellis to the squad — a vocal, commanding centre-back who’s brought exactly what we need at the back: leadership, organisation and calmness under pressure.

Whether he’s marshalling the defence or barking out instructions, Russ brings a steady head and big presence to the pitch. A natural leader and a rock at the back.

Big addition. Big impact. Welcome to the team, Russ!

🔏 Signing #13 - Jono Ellis

We’re delighted to announce the arrival of Jono Ellis — a quick, exciting attacking player who's already turning heads.

A brand new addition to the squad, but you wouldn’t know it. He’s hit the ground running and made an instant impact both on and off the pitch. Expect goals, flair and defenders left chasing shadows.

One to watch this season! Welcome aboard, Jono!

🔏 Signing #12 – Ben Berry

Ben brings pace, flair and a healthy dislike of playing anywhere that isn’t up top. A natural striker who can also cause chaos out wide, just don’t expect him to track back if you stick him at wing-back.

When he’s not chasing a red ball on the cricket field, he’s (occasionally) available to chase through balls for us. And when he’s really unlucky, he finds himself in his least favourite role of all: club linesman.

🔏 Signing #11 - Andy Bartlett

A no-nonsense midfielder who lives for a crunching tackle, Andy brings grit, graft and a good dose of ankle-breaking energy every weekend (once a season when he's able to get off work and away from a Cornish campsite).

By day, he’s selling sofas — by weekend, he’s folding opponents into them.

Great to have Andy signed on once again... we're just hoping he can make more than the 1 appearance this season!

(Friendly Match – 20 July 2025)

A thrilling, end-to-end encounter saw Kings Arms FC narrowly edged out 7–6 by Tamerton Foliot, a team from the division above.

From the opening whistle, Kings Arms showed no signs of inferiority despite the league gap, taking the lead early on through Zach Tiddy, who reacted quickest to a rebound and slotted home confidently.

Tamerton hit back soon after with a well-struck effort from distance to make it 1–1, but the game’s defining talking point came moments later. Robbie Milne burst through on goal but produced a reckless, lunging tackle on the opposition goalkeeper – one that could easily have resulted in a red card. To the surprise of many, the referee showed only a yellow, and Milne, acknowledging the severity of the incident, subbed himself off in a moment of commendable sportsmanship.

Tamerton then took the lead with a slice of fortune – a mis-hit cross drifted over everyone and nestled into the far corner to make it 2–1. But Kings Arms responded in style. George Cordon found himself 1-on-1, calmly sat the keeper down and slotted into an empty net to level it up at 2–2 going into the break.

The second half picked up right where the first left off. Cordon was brought down in the box and stepped up himself to dispatch the penalty, putting Kings Arms 3–2 ahead. But Tamerton fought back again, levelling from a corner before curling in a classy finish to retake the lead at 4–3. They added a fifth soon after, extending their lead to 5–3.

Refusing to back down, Kings Arms clawed it back. Tiddy slid a lovely through ball into Cordon, who finished with composure into the bottom right. Moments later, a surging run from Liam Coles starting from his own half, ended in another slick assist for Cordon, who completed his hat-trick to make it 5–5.

In a chaotic final stretch, Tamerton added two goals, which in the end, despite Kings Arms scoring in the final minutes, was enough to put them out of sight and clinch the victory - A long-range strike from Tiddy was parried and Cai Holder was on hand to tap in the rebound to cap off the scoring at 6–7.

We wish Tamerton Foliot all the best for their upcoming season in the top league.

As always, our thanks goes to Kings Arms Pub, Timber Vaults and MEP Systems for their continued support.
