ROSIE TO QUINS - WE WILL MISS YOU

After confirmation that her partner, Marlie Packer, has joined Harlequins Women, the SSA is sad, but not surprised, to hear that Rosie Galligan is returning to join Quins too, leaving Saracens Women at the end of the 2025/26 season.

She is stepping down from rugby for now and Into a spell of maternity leave.

28 year old Rosie is a Rugby World Cup winner in 2025, her second competition, with England Red Roses.

This ends two spells with Saracens Women with one at Harlequins Women in between.

The athletic lock forward started her rugby life at Aylesford Bulls and also represented England U20s before graduating into the senior Red Roses.

It hasn’t all been been plain sailing for Rosie, as a bout of meningitis in September 2019 was followed by a serious injury in January 2020 when a fall in a line-out caused a broken leg and ankle along with three ruptured ligaments.

It was a truly horrible scene for those who witnessed it.

Rosie first joined Saracens Women for the 2016/17 season, and was part of two Premier15s titles, now PWR.

She first signed for Harlequins in June 2021, returning to Sarries for the 2023/24 season.

Rosie, is currently expecting her first child and Marlie’s second.

She has always been, popular, friendly and responsive with supporters, and we will miss her.

Thank you Rosie Galligan, for all you have done.

EXPRESS DELIVERY

The SSA sweated it out with every Saracens supporter, as Saracens Women finally saw off the determined challenge of Exeter Chiefs in the PWR semi-final at StoneX Stadium.

They will meet Trailfinders Women at the Twickenham Stoop, on Sunday 28th June at 15.00, and the Ealing side will contest their first final after beating champions for the last 3 consecutive years, Gloucester Hartpury.

Saracens recovered from a half-time deficit and had to come from behind in the second half to win.

This was a very different Exeter, to the team that succumbed twice during the season, and England Red Rose flyer, Claudia Moloney-MacDonald, opened the scoring, although Liv McGoverne couldn’t convert.

Sarries’ Canadian flyer, Alysha Corrigan and England’s pride, Jess Breach, playing in her 50th Saracens match, put their side 14-5 in front, with help from Zoe Harrison’s boot.

The awkward scrummaging technique of USA Eagle, Hope Rogers, caused significant disquiet amongst the home faithful and she compounded this by crossing the line for the visitors in her customary fashion.

Suitably nettled, Saracens Women struck back with tries from Donna Rose and PWR Player of the Season and Player of the Match, Liv Apps, giving them a 28-12 lead with Zoe again on target.

Then a horrible case of Déjà vu from the men’s semi-final v Exeter Chiefs ensued, and a yellow card completely changed the momentum and direction of the game.

New Zealand referee, Richard Gordon, appeared to allow a tap from an Exeter penalty, far from the mark and in the ensuing collision, Marlie Packer was sent to the bin.

30 seconds of match time later, Amy Rule, touched down, followed by Cliodhna Moloney-Macdonald and even as Marlie returned, Hope Rogers again, to give Chiefs a 31-28 lead at the break that had looked unlikely when it was 15 a side.

The dynamic Liv Apps struck with a determined second try of the match that Zoe converted, but her side found themselves trailing by three points again after a disallowed Emma Hardy try, and a Maisy Allen score for Chiefs, Liv McGoverne striking 4 conversions between the posts in the match, overall.

The match could have been lost by Sarries at that point as the visitors built pressure, but a backfield catch and blinding acceleration by the Jess Express, restored a narrow lead as Zoe was unable to add the extras.

Saracens Women kept their heads and composure, to close out a mighty battle, 40-38.

Commiserations to Exeter Chiefs Women. You can’t try harder than that.

Congratulations to the whole Saracens Women’s group.

That was hard and well won.

A LEGEND DEPARTS

The SSA is very sad to hear, that 36 year old, Yeovil born, Marlie Packer OBE, with 2 Rugby World Cup Winners medals, a Saracens centurion with 119 caps, World Rugby Women's 15s Player of the Year in 2023, and a 3 times Premier15s now PWR, winner, will leave Saracens Women at the end of the 2025/26 season, marking the end of an era.

More vintage car than veteran, she has played some of her finest rugby for Saracens Women and England Red Roses during this season.

Marlie, joined Sarries in 2017 from Bristol, having also played for Bath and Wasps, and will join Harlequins Women.

She helped usher in a new period of success for the women in black, and in 2018, she was named the Saracens Coaches Player of the Season.

The tearaway back row and ferocious competitor, swept progress and achievement along in her powerhouse slipstream.

She scored six tries on her Saracens debut and has always been eye-catching in that way, her leadership drive manifesting itself by her captaining the side, and her country, to a Rugby World Cup no less, many times.

Her legacy will be felt everywhere when she leaves North London as her influence is vast and wide ranging.

Legendary isn’t overstating the case for the devoted mother of Oliver, and soon to be a mother of 2, this time with Rosie Galligan of Saracens and England Red Roses.

Another RWC winner.

Marlie is a dedicated individual and she still has work to do.

She will certainly want to leave with a PWR winners medal under her belt.

She loves the support and shows it, and we love her.

We can’t thank you enough, Marlie Packer OBE.

CONGRATULATIONS JON TIMMS

The inaugural SSA Saracens Women’s awards, had very worthy winners (see our full match post for details) but none more so than Supporter of the Year, Jon Timms.

A valued member of the SSA, Jon attends Saracens Women’s matches both home and away, and home matches need some explanation, as he drives from Somerset for those, and to wherever Saracens Women go, as a regular and welcome member of SSAaway.

He can be seen as a flag bearer at home matches, attending early despite his long journey, to form guards of honour for the players and staff and helps to encourage young supporters.

As a valued helper to SSA Media, his many photographs help promote his team and women’s rugby in general.

He gives both significant priority on his personal social media pages.

He also attends women’s international rugby with the same enthusiasm.

Jon is a good natured and well-liked man and is easy to spot as one of the tabard wearing supporters group. His commitment is total.

He is easy to hear as well and he gives his all in support of the team.

Thank you Jon for all you do and the help you give.

This award is highly well deserved.

A HOME SEMI-FINAL AWAITS

It was a lighter feeling for the SSA and the supporters who travelled back from the men’s defeat in Exeter, as we could all relax.

Round 18 of the PWR matched Saracens Women and Trailfinders Women at StoneX Stadium, Saracens, with a home semi-final already secured. (Ticket details below).

Saracens finished just 2 points behind league leaders Gloucester Hartpury as the reigning champions have lost 2 in a row.

Saracens 80-14 Trailfinders Women told the tale and it was a comfortable victory between teams deploying very different selection strategies.

Saracens continues to keep the senior squad match sharp, while Trailfinders chose to rest many after their upset of champions, Gloucester Hartpury.

They already had 4th place in the bag and will visit Gloucester, this time in the playoffs.

Exeter Chiefs Women will visit Saracens Women.

Lotte Sharp opened the Saracens scoring near the left touchline which Zoe Harrison converted, before Player of the Match, Sophie De Goede, had a good looking finish ruled out by Ben Wood and his team, for a double movement.

This didn’t deter Marlie Packer, as she picked up and scored by the posts, after strong work from her forward colleagues. Zoe converted.

Marlie had one of her tearaway afternoons in the loose and put Sophie Bridger away on a beautiful line.

She smoothly accelerated through a gap to score under the posts with another Zoe success after.

Pressure then led to a desperate deliberate knock on by Lauren Leone of the visitors, that denied Alysha Corrigan a run in, with all possible defenders lying on the ground.

A penalty try and a yellow card, plus a Saracens try bonus point, came after 26 mins.

Trailfinders are a plucky outfit, with scrum half, Sophie Munton scoring next and Niamh Gallagher converting.

Fine young half-backs these.

Alysha Corrigan made sure of her next attempt, cutting in off the right wing to score. Zoe’s kick then hit the post.

Paige Farries, looking at home in the 15 shirt, is deceptively strong, and she broke a tackle to score, with Zoe on the money.

Saracens Women 40-7 Trailfinders Women was the half-time score, and Trailfinders struck first after the break, with a sharp interception try by Niamh Gallagher and also converted by her.

Sarries came roaring back as though they were affronted, and a Paige Farries break and pass (was it forward?) put Alysha Corrigan away for her second try and Zoe’s 5th success from the tee, after which she departed for Beth Blacklock.

The home side then piled on the scrum pressure, and during the penalty advantage, Sophie De Goede picked up and smashed over, Beth providing the extras.

Enter Jess Breach off the bench, and she warmed up with an 80 metre Jess Express dash for a spectacular try that Beth converted.

Paige Farries again showed physicality to score her 2nd try as Beth slotted her 3rd conversion.

Mr Wood made the visitors’ lives more difficult, by awarding blind side flanker, Niamh Swales, a yellow card

He wasn’t finished with the yellows.

Carmen Tremelling filled the Saracens ho**er berth off the bench, returning to the position, and she hadn’t forgotten how to score at the back of a maul.

The wind held Beth’s conversion short.

Poppy Cleall of Saracens was the next to see yellow from Ben Wood.

There was a head contact and she was in an upright position, mitigation coming from a defender changing the position of the attacking player and there was little Poppy could do.

Sophie De Goede finished the Saracens try scoring and Beth, the conversions.

The gulf in class was magnified, when on 60 minutes, Liz Crake joined Poppy in the bin, but the 13 and then 14 players, conceded nothing.

So knockout rugby and Exeter Chiefs Women.

Can’t wait for it and congratulations to Alex Austerberry and his group.

The inaugural SSA Saracens Women’s awards were presented on the field with spectators in close proximity.

Player of the Year - Zoe Harrison - presented by Barbara Buxton and Colin Garrett.

Best Newcomer - Liv Apps - presented by David Loxham.

Supporter of the Season - Jon Timms - presented by Alex Austerberry.
