Oxford BSAC Scuba Diving Club Friendly diving club with own hardboat, regular dives, fortnightly indoor pool hire, and discounted air fills. Come diving with us!

This is the Oxford BSAC page (we also have a Facebook Group). We are now a mature club with a friendly and enthusiastic atmosphere. Writing in early 2011, the branch has around 90 members from the Oxford area stretching from Bicester in the North to Didcot in the South and from Witney in the West to Aylesbury in the East. We even have some members who live here during the week and go home

at weekends. We cover a good cross-section of Oxford society. Ages range from young children who snorkel to pensioners who dive. Of the membership, over half are active divers. We have around a dozen snorkelling members and twenty or so social members. The activites of the branch centre around three areas, the clubhouse, pool training and diving. We also carry a decent level of equipment and diving boats - all of which help to make us a successful dive club which has been going for over 50 years. Run entirely by volunteers, we train and develop our own divers, both in diving and associated skills. We also try to help in our community wherever possible and have taken part in free open days, offered boat cover during regattas and hold talks in our clubhouse. We are always happy to recruit new members, be they untrained novices, experienced divers or instructors - all are welcome no matter who they have trained with. You will be made very welcome, so please enquire about joining Oxford BSAC.

Last weekend our Club President, Andy Pickering celebrated 45 years of diving by returning to the site of his first dive - Stoney Cove

He shared the following on his experience

9th May 1981, having joined Oxford Branch BSAC the previous year and completing the pool training over the winter, I had my first open water dive, accompanied by the then Diving Officer, Geoff Hughes and Dennis King in Stoney Cove, diving to 20m, this was followed, after a surface interval with a second dive, this time to a shallower 9m for some exercises accompanied by Dennis Pridmore and Steve Guse.

To mark the 45 anniversary of this dive, I returned to Stoney Cove on the 9th May this year for a couple more dives, this time accompanied by club members, Georgie Rawson, Nick Beloff, Anthony Hayes and Alex Brady.

In the intervening years, Stoney has changed to some extent, the large shop and training facilities certainly weren’t there, and the filling station had a small shop and recompression chamber, also there were fewer underwater attraction to be found, although I do remember the Viscount cockpit, complete with a pike in the space under the floor.

I would like to thank those who joined me for dives and lunch, especially Georgie for the celebratory cake.
