Why biomechanics matters more than you think.

Players are more commonly getting ACL, MCL and other injuries that can cost them a good portion of the season. But what if I told you that there is a way to reduce this risk.

In female sports, most girls don't access the gym until they are 14 and boys maybe at 12 years old, so could this be the reason?

In short, weight training starts when you are a baby and then you progressively pick up larger loads; Toys, food and even thinks you shouldn't. So the myth that you shouldn't weight train until you are 16 is pretty much non exhistant.

Since qualifying as a biomechanics coach, I have gained a reputation for enhancing movement quality and improving speed by a minimum of 0.3 seconds in session 1.

How?

Whether I am operating in a group setting or in a 1 to 1, I pay particular attention to how an athletes moves and what happens throughout the movement identifying certain patterns.

This enables me to identify muscular imbalances, the reason athletes aren't explosive and also why they are unable to produce / absorb force effectively in jumping and landing.

While going on a course is great, it doesn't teach you everything and neither does the latest scientific paper on speed development. What it does give you are the foundations that you can build your own learnings and development from.

Every persons biomechanical make up is different, based on age, experience, training load amongst other factors.

By paying added attention to detail, I have been able to excel my clients athletic development long term by making small changes to their movement and getting big rewards.

If this relates to you then please feel free to reach out and lets see how I can help enhance your movement quality and get you to the next levels in your performance.

England Talent Pathway recognition for one of my athletes

I began working with Niamh before Christmas helping her to recover from an ACL injury she picked up whilst playing community rugby league.

After doing a biomechnanics assessment and through regular feedback from Niamh's mum from her physio, we were able to make vast improvements to her knee strength, enhance range of movement and get her back playing.

Niamh has now moved on to play for Leigh Minors RLFC and has also been training with Wigan Warriors P2P programme.

After returning to play, she hit another setback when breaking her collarbone and despite initial frustrations, she took the time needed to recover, committed to her rehab and this weekend took part in the England Talent Pathway.

By demonstrating mental resilience, having the right support network around her and overcoming 2 big injuries in the past 12 months, Niamh continues to progress in her Rugby League journey.

To work with an athlete who is committed to their development despite setbacks beyond control, truly is a pleasure and highlights just why I love coaching.

Looking forward to continue supporting Niamh in what is sure to be an exciting journey ahead.

As we approach the end of another school year, its time to reflect on the progress that has been made in the community and here are just a few highlights;

3 of our 121 clients have gone on to player pathway programmes with Will enjoying time with Sale Sharks, James training with Salford RFLC and Niamh now in the Wigan Warriors and England pathway teams. We are very proud of your progress and has been a pleasure to play a small part in your development.

We continue to engage with Whittaker Moss Primary School where we have run the after school rugby club for over 2 years.
From this club, we have seen players go on to participate in external rugby activity with players joining Rochdale RUFC and also regular participation in inter school competitions.

By teaming up with Rochdale Hornets Foundation, we have been able to provide over 100 tickets to families to watch their first live rugby game and also run half term camps using their Balderstone park facility which. We look forward to continuing our work with Hornets and provide more engegement for all parties.

This week, Chris takes up a new role with Bradfors Bulls where he will be leading the strength and conditioning delivery on the clubs foundation girls programme, providing performance support to upward of 30 girls.

Looking ahead to 2027, we are already speaking with the school games management teams in Rochdale and Oldham as we plan to build upon our competitions offering with a RL festival and more regular inter school competitions.
This will enable us to continue to provide pathways into both the amateur and professional club programmes and support the growth of the game for the long term.
