It was a great night at the mighty Blue Club on Monday with both casual games from the regulars and some new faces, and the 2nd team taking on Bolton 3.

Match report Blue Club 2 vs Bolton 3:

On the bottom 2 boards, Shiju and Rob were the first to finish.
Shiju, who arrived late, started 30 mins down on the clock but managed to find a swift and crushing attack on his opponent to make the game 1-0 to Blue Club

Rob played a London-y queens gambit transposition with two knights and after a queenside bishop for knight exchange on c3 his opponent launched the kingside pawns forward and managed to cramp Rob up a bit before he unwound at the cost of a pawn. His opponent then left his queen in front of his king in the centre so he had a nice e4 break combined with a couple of nasty pins which left Rob up a piece and his opponents king very exposed. His opponent resigned shortly after. 2-0.

Next was Chris who played an opponent that outgraded him by 200 elo. His opponent castled queen side and Chris sent an avalanche of pieces to attack the now vulnerable king. This was too much for his opponent and Chris managed to get a great attacking win. 3-0

Next up was Jake who won a pawn early in the game but at the expense of his king getting hunted out by all of his opponents pieces, however, Jake defended well, managed to trade off the queens and his opponent had no more attack. Jake then converted the pawn up position into a winning endgame and his opponent resigned making it 4-0 to Blue Club.

Jon started off the game strong with a great position against his opponent, but under time pressure made a few too many mistakes and ultimately lost the game. 4-1

Robin was the last to finish with both players playing an intense game with only 2 knights and 2 pawns each by the end game. Robins opponent got to a position where he had 2 passed pawns vs robins 1. The game looked drawn or possibly in favour of his opponent but his opponent ran out of time and Robin won to make the final score an incredible 5-1 to Blue Club.

26.01.2026 Heywood 1 vs Blue Club 2

After not posting for a while we are back with a match report in the new year.

First game to end was Robin who swapped his two rooks for his opponents Queen early on but ended up getting his knight pinned to his queen and eventually resigned the game.
1-0 to Haywood

Next game to end was Jake who won a pawn early in the game and precisely converted this into an endgame with a rook and 5 pawns vs a rook and 4. He then used this advantage to win another pawn and his opponent resigned.
1-1

Rob played a very aggressive game with a strong attack on the king side, however he missed a vital counterattack from his opponent and hung mate in 1.
2-1 to Haywood

Dan B swapped off his 2 knights for 2 bishops early on but lost a pawn during the process, however he defended valiantly and his bishop was on a strong square so the players agreed to a draw.
2.5-1.5

Jon and his opponent played a slow, closed position in which every pawn was still on the board except the f file. However both players realised there was no way through and agreed to a draw.
3-2

It all comes down to Armand on the top board. Armand early on got into a position with a bishop pair vs a bishop and knight and put a lot of pressure on his opponents centre pawn. After eventually winning the pawn and trading off some pieces. Both players had a rook, an opposite coloured bishop but Armand was a pawn up. With both players below 5 minutes, both players made a few mistakes but after around 100 moves, Armand found a way to promote his pawn, win the game and secure the draw for Blue Club.
3-3

20.10.25 Blue Club 3 vs Northenden 1

We knew going into this one that it would be a tough fixture which was further proved by being outgraded by an average of 100 rating on each board.

First game to finish was Lewis. Both players brought out their queens early and played very aggressively with them, and it was Lewis who managed to eventually win a pawn, put pressure on the king and eventually go on to win. (1-0)

Dan finished next, he played a Sicilian against a double fianchettoed bishop pair and lost a central pawn through a nice trap which started a slow and painful middle game and eventually led to a lost end game (1-1)

Jon got into a position where both players had a rook, 7 pawns but Jon had a knight and his opponent had a bishop. With the position still being fairly open. The bishop caused too many problems for Jon and ultimately led to his downfall. (1-2)

Jeff exchanged a minor piece for 2 pawns early in the game which at first looked to be a mistake but he eventually found a way to promote one of his pawns and go on to win the game to bring the score back level (2-2)

Captain Jake played a very complicated and tricky game where his opponent sacrificed a pawn early on to start a strong attack on Jake’s King. However, Jake managed to defend from this threat but had to trade a rook for a bishop in the process. This led to a fairly equal endgame with both players having less than 2 minutes on the clock but Jake managed to keep his nerve under time pressure and force an error from his opponent to win his queen and the game to secure the draw (3-2)

Last game was a heartbreaking one as Rob had a rook vs 2 pawns in the endgame. It was a complicated endgame and theoretically a draw but Rob ran out of time and thus lost his game (3-3).

Blue Club 3 secured their first point of the season against a strong team that we will face again in the cup in 2 weeks!!!

9.10.25 Swinton 4 vs MBC 3

It was the first game of the season for the 3rd team and a first game as captain for Jake Howard. Going into it we knew it’d be a tough game against some rapidly improving juniors.
Paul was the first to finish, his opponent played a very aggressive middlegame and eventually won both a bishop and rook so Paul resigned. (1-0)
Next to fall were both Terry & Svetlana who were outplayed in the middlegame by some strong juniors. (3-0)
Jeff and his opponent played a very closed position where nobody really found the time to attack and a draw was agreed which sealed the win for Swinton. (3.5-0.5)
Lewis played a very aggressive game and managed to exchange his knight and a pawn for a rook, however this ultimately led to his downfall when his opponent had very strong passed pawns that couldn’t be stopped. (4.5-0.5)
However, it was not all doom and gloom as new captain Jake was able to defend from his opponents very aggressive attack on his King and simultaneously promote a pawn on the now undefended queen side (4.5-1.5)

Swinton were also then handed some deductions for playing their boards 5 & 6 the wrong way around, so final score was 3-2.5 to Swinton 4.

11.8 MBC1 vs 3cs 1 derby night! ⚔️

It was time for the derby that's bigger than the Old Firm as Chorltons surprise slip up vs Swinton last Thursday opened the door for one of the Oldham clubs to take advantage. The team news for the MBC was captain Mark making a surprise appearance in a home game and 3cs was missing their star player Rob who had decided he preferred a beach abroad to Costa Del Chadderton for some reason 😁 but otherwise had a strong team with Traitor Tim hiding on bottom board following a plethora of steadily more embarrassing losses to half the team. The ref sounded his whistle and the huge derby got underway with around 10 fans (silently) roaring the teams on!

The match started at frantic pace, tackles was flying in and Robin went in search of his usual (chess!) violence against Hunaid. However he fell victim to the famous 3csism 'loose pieces lose games' and dropped a knight. He then threw the kitchen sink, emptied the garage and cellar but had to resign as it was good knight and give 3cs first blood. The MBC warriors then started toppling like dominoes as Armand and Matt soon followed. Armand also dropped a piece somewhere vs Kyle which also gave Kyle a double as he had also beaten Armand in the most recent derby and thus showing Traitor Tim how it's done. Robs board 1 deputy Mitchell also took down Matt in another violent battle where Matt did an exchange sac which worked about as well as the Latics strikers finishing last Saturday and 3cs was 3-0 up and cruising.

There was still hope though as the baby faced assassin Jake had a full point bye due to playing for Blue Club against Traitor Tim and Tim wasn't reacting well to being booed at every move 😂 and found himself in a rather dire position with no winning chances but luckily it was as congested as the M25 at rush hour and it ended peacefully and Tim celebrated like he had won the world cup at finally not losing to a blue shirt! So 3cs win the match but of course goal difference could come into play so they was still going for the kill. Andy who said he hates playing Mondays (wonder if that may be referring to weekend 🍺) but of course couldn't miss derby night under the lights ended up with a bad opening vs captain Mark but his losses are as rare as Halleys comet so he escaped with a draw. The boss battle was Bob who had just come back from a very respectable 50% in the grandads section at the British championships and Dale who doesnt play much these days but let's say the games are always entertaining! Bob opened 1.c3 2.Qc2 which he has christened the 'clock gobbler' Turns out Bob missed a chande to gobble Dale's queen and ended up having most of his pawns gobbled and the final score ended in a surprisingly one sided 5-1 win to 3cs who will win the league should they beat Swinton on the 4th September and thus bragging rights go to Costa Del Lees!

Been a busy couple of weeks or so, Dan Cs 4th team earnt a credible draw away at Stockport 2nds thanks to wins from Dan B and Lana and then the 1st team need to get their Wembley suits as an impressive 4-2 win away at Eccles mean they will face Chorlton in the final next month and will hope to go one better than last season where we lost to Swinton!

And last but not least last Monday Marks
2nd team won 3.5-2.5 in a tight and tense match vs Bury. As I was too busy entertaining many of the new and newish members I saw very little of the action, although super sub Terry picked up yet another win and Jon also won convincingly via some Robin style violence. And even a rare loss for Jake didn't matter as we powered our way to victory!

Hope to see as many of you as possible at the club tomorrow as we have a treat, it is the biggest match of the season, the Oldham Derby and it is MBC1 vs 3cs 1. Who will claim bragging rights? See you tomorrow from 19.30 for the answer!

04/08/2025

Chess club will open as usual from 19.30 tonight, see you all there and I will catch up on last week's match reports when I have more information!

28/7/25 MBC 3 vs Marple 2

One extreme to another tonight for the reporting timing!

We was given a 1-0 headstart as Marple unfortunately could only field 5. Lewis then drew fairly quickly and if I am being honest I saw none of the game. However the other 4 all went past 10pm! And then enter Terry who was sporting a tangerine latics shirt which he claimed he found in a tip 😂🤬 however it inspired him to victory, turns out he has been listening to Robins expert advice as he ground out a win where he had a monstrous knight but a fat pawn for a bishop which he managed to exchange and that led to the win! Jake who is fast becoming the clubs grinder managed to win from a level looking position where he all of a sudden had 2 connected passed pawns in the centre and also a monstrous knight which proved to be decisive. Harry unfortunately spoiled a promising position by tossing his knight away but the match was won. 2 connected passed pawns also proved to be the theme in Robs game in a rook and pawn ending. It looked resignable but he hung in and his opponent couldn't find the inevitable kill. And after many adventures he managed to neutralise it to a drawn king and pawn vs king (the opposition!) So a 4-2 win, well played all! There was also the usual banter blitz/casual games/coaching from Robin in the background and great to see some new faces!

Apolgies for the laziness in posting, I was in the process of writing it up Tuesday morning on the tram, got distracted and then it slipped my mind! Anyway last Monday the 2nds repeated the 1st teams win over Northenden. New signing Robert continued his fine start to life at the MBC with a crushing win over an opponent who had just finished in the top 3 of the Glossop u1700. Lewis unfortunately missed a rook sac in a promising position to level the scores for them. 3 draws followed, Jon looked to be doing well with active rooks but couldn't force a breakthrough, Robin went for his caveman attack but it got repelled and ended peacefully. I then had to go as Jon wanted to get home and enjoy a couple of well earnt bottles of Stella so all I know after that is Jake drew with meant our hero with the deciding win was Armand! Well played!

At the club tomorow Harry the H pawns 3rd team are taking on Marple 2, there will also be plenty of boards sets and clocks that can be used up or downstairs, see you all tomorow at 19.30ish!

20/07/2025

Chess club will be open as normal from 19.30 tomorrow, there is 1 match, the 2nd team are taking on Northenden which will be tough as they only lost 3.5-2.5 vs our 1sts in the cup! If you want to (silently) cheer them on or take a set downstairs then we will see you tomorow all members old and new welcome!

Bob, Jeff, Dave and part timer Tim all competed in the 1st Glossop congress. Unfortunately it was generally a bad set of results, Jeff had an excellent 1st day scoring 2/3 vs higher rated players but lost both today. Dangerous Dave found the clock very dangerous as he lost 2 on time, along with a win and a couple of half point byes. Bob also wasnt himself, he got 0.5/3 on the saturday and then after polishing off a spoons brekkie arrived to see the dreaded full point bye. Luckily one of the organisers kindly gave him a game which he won but he lost again in the afternoon after a tough struggle. Tim did manage to get a respectable 3/5 in the open though! Lewis came close to winning the Ashton rapid u1550 section as he was on 4.5/5 but sadly a heartbreaking loss in the last round occurred. You'll win it next time!
