Training residents and community professionals in Community Organising
Community Organising is the work of bringing people together to take action around things they care about most.
Building on the successes and lessons learned from the Age Friendly Nottinghamshire project it was very quickly recognised that a whole community approach was much more beneficial than merely concentrating on older residents. The Listening process used within the Community Organising approach highlighted the passion in younger residents to lead community projects that benefited older residents. Also, many of the concerns of older residents were about the anti-social behaviour of younger people. Understanding that it ‘takes a whole village to raise a child’ and taking this into account and recognising the benefits to the whole community, moving into Phase 2 it was decided to re-brand the project Community Friendly Nottinghamshire (CFN)
Community activation is a unique approach which requires highly developed skills from the Neighbourhood Co-ordinators to build trust and support the grassroots up. The Community Organising
approach encourages a culture where residents support each other thus reducing the reliance on Health and Social Services. The improvements in physical, mental and social wellbeing of individuals that feel well connected to their community has been well researched and documented. The model puts a lot of emphasis on helping people to find their own solutions through an accredited listening exercise. The aim of this encourages people to take responsibility to manage their own wellbeing which benefits themselves and builds resilient communities.
