Wow, what a rollercoaster of an afternoon! The best way to end the season and what the lads deserve after their efforts throughout a tough season at times.
After a slow start we grew in the game and started to create some chances but just couldn’t find that last action to finish them off. Finally, we got ourselves level through a Max bullet header after Hilts delivered a lovely floated cross to the back post. It was what we deserved but I think it was obvious we still had lots more to give, especially with our composure on the ball and proactiveness off it.
After a chat and a reset at half time, we came out much more on the front foot and dominated pretty much from the whistle until the end of the game. The difference it made having the defence and midfield stepping up to win the ball when they could, but also then having the composure to find a pass, improved us massively. In addition to this, the supporting forward runs from the full back made us look so much more balanced in attack and is something they must be ready to do all game.
For a while I thought the goal might not come but Max, who really was the man in that second half, stepped up with some great composure to cut into his weaker left foot and slot it home into the far corner. The joy on the lads faces after the goal and at full time makes our jobs so worth it!
MOTM went to Max for stepping up when we needed him, especially in that second half, he ran after lost causes, got in behind the defence, linked well to feet and did everything a striker should do. He’s been fantastic all season and it was a fitting way to end it. Well done mate 👏👏
As it is the last game of the season I want to do an individuals section:
Sam - This was Sam’s last game for the Wolves and he really came with the right attitude today. He was concentrated and although wasn’t as involved as other games this season, he still bailed us out with a crucial save to tip the ball over in the first half. His kicking was also spot on today. Well done mate, it’s been a pleasure getting to know you and being your coach for the last 5 years, best wishes for the future!
Swifty - Harry had to step out to Right back today due to injuries and after having not played there for months was as dogged and determined as ever. As always this season, he was tenacious in the tackle and used his body really well to win the ball. Going forward he grew into the game and linked really well with Sol and Hilts on the right. He’s probably fed up of me shouting at him for his positioning so enjoy the peace and quiet now swifty well done!
Aidan - Aidan’s leadership has been growing throughout this season and he was really solid again at CB today. He made all the necessary interventions but as well as the communication, his ability to start to get on the ball and try and actually pass it out from the back is what we need. The difference it made once he started to do that showed in the rest of the teams performance. Well done Aid.
Benjamin - Another leader for us this season, Ben had to fill in at CB for us today and rose to the occasion. Once he had settled in the game I thought he locked that left hand side down, covering well and using his aggression to make it a tough afternoon for their strikers. He’s done whatever we’ve asked of him this season and we really appreciate him for it!
Ethan - Ethan was another one who definitely grew into the game today. On the ball his composure and technique always comes through and he always seems to make good decisions on it. Off the ball I think he really upped his game second half, pressing aggressively into their wingers and not giving them an inch, working really well with Benjamin to keep us solid on that side. Loved it when he got forward to support the winger so keep that up mate, well done!
Walshy - After struggling for injuries and fitness a lot recently, Harry really stepped up for us today and did excellently to sustain his performance for a full game. He was strong and physical alongside Ollie in midfield and when he got the ball I liked his composure to get it down and try and a pass quickly, playing with a sense of urgency I liked. Well done Harry👏
Ollie - Captain fantastic! Like the rest of the team, he definitely grew into the game but second half came into his own. His physicality and engine are so missed when he’s not in the team and it meant we just sustained pressure in their half more often than not. On the ball we know the power Ollie has got and we want him to use it and get shots and crosses off. Whilst he didn’t get on the scoresheet today, he did put in some dangerous balls behind and was unlucky with a couple of free kicks. Whilst I love his aggression, he does owe me a tenner for that yellow card😂well done mate!
Sol - I’ve mentioned composure several times already but Sol is as cool and calm as you like. His intelligence, awareness and technique sets him apart and it did today. Both his link up play and his ability to create a yard of space to shoot was simply outstanding today and he deserved a goal for sure, on another day he gets it! A technical leader of our team and simply superb Sol!
Hilts - What an outlet Harry is for us down that right hand side. His dribbling and physicality make him hard to stop and the amount of chances he creates from that was on full show today. His work rate and listening is a coach’s dream and once him, Sol and Swifty got going on that right hand side they were hard to stop. Well done mate!
Keegan - I loved how Keegan took responsibility at the start of the game today when the going was tough and the team was struggling. He was the one who started showing personality to take on his man and get us up the pitch, providing an incredible outlet on the left wing. The amount of times he beat his man in the first half was second to none and although it was tougher in the second half as he had two defenders on him, he still was a threat. I know he’ll be frustrated that he didn’t score but a lot of that work he does for the team to stretch the opposition defence goes under the radar, I think. Well done mate 👏
Max - I used the word technical leader with Sol and that’s what Max was for us today. When the going gets tough in the big games you need your best technical players to get on the ball and set the example with their composure and skill. Second half Max was the epitome of this, combining dogged running with great link up play, tricky feet in the dribble and the two crucial finishes in the match. You deserve those goals for your work this season mate well done 🤩
Shoutout to our injury stricken players in J, George and Harry L, we’re hope you’re all feeling 100% soon.
Thank you as well to all of you parents and relatives of the lads for all your support this season, no matter the results. You’re a special group of parents that only encourage and never cause any trouble (Middlewich take note) and we appreciate all of you!
