“Who needs a ref”

2 home games in 2 weeks for Gari as we faced Silverstone Blues in the Sunday Trophy & Wellingborough Sargents in League 1.

Against Silverstone we didn’t know much about the opposition but we were all too familiar with the ref. Told 2 hours before kick off we didn’t have a ref so up stepped Secretary, Vice Captain, CB, Sean.

Silverstones bare 11 looked the stronger with their winger causing us problems most of the game. We took the lead though after a corner into the box, wingers smashing it against the head of the opposition for an OG to go 1-0 up at half time.

2nd half we again struggled but the 11 told as their keeper got injured after a thundurous shot from Wingers, meaning their CB had to step in goal. Then they were down to 9 with their RB pulling up with cramp. Niall grabbed
a sloppy goal after a good save and Remy, who had been hounded all game, got his goal to make it 3-0. Not deserved, but onto the next game.

Next up, Sargents, who were bottom before the game but we don’t underestimate anyone. Again we had a late pull out from the ref so Sargents started the game providing a ref.

It was the Jacko and Maz show first half with Maz getting 3 assists and a goal and Jacko proving dangerous from the unfamiliar midfield role with a goal and assist. Cahill and Wingers grabbing another goal each to make it 4-0 at the break.

Second half, Manager Ed came onto ref (terrible decision) and we rang the changes to give everyone a 45. Highlights were Sargents worldie, quality save from Peter and Ed getting close to sending off Willis for taking out (tactical foul to stop counter and definite goal) a 16 year old 😅. 4-1 winners and up to 4th in the league.

Match Report: Gari vs Crown & Cushion

Gari welcomed back Ben Botts and Sean M to the squad for our clash against Crown & Cushion—formerly known as Phipps, who we faced in L4 last season. Kick-off was delayed due to the referee needing to check his tyre pressures at a garage 🥴, sign of things to come...

Despite the poor pitch conditions, we settled quickly and played some tidy football. Early chances fell our way: Sean M’s two free kicks were narrowly off target and saved, while Jacko’s free kick found space. We dominated possession, keeping C&C pinned in their own half.

However, as in previous matches, individual errors proved costly. A needless foul on the edge of the box gifted C&C their first shot—and they made it count. 1-0 down.

At half-time, we were frustrated but not defeated. Changes were made: Wingers and Josh came on, and Victor (our own James Milner) slotted into CDM.

The impact was immediate. Wingers, our back-post specialist, latched onto a brilliant cross from Maz after slick one-touch play down the right. 1-1.

The referee’s performance was poor throughout, seemingly swayed by whoever shouted loudest. Fortunately, it worked in our favour. GK Peter collected a loose ball slowly, baiting their forward into a reckless lunge—earning him a red card. With 20 minutes left, it was 11 vs 10 and all to play for.

We took a deserved lead when Cahill scored his first-ever headed goal, nodding in a pinpoint cross from Jacko. 2-1. In the process, Maz broke the net which delayed the game as the home side tried everything to get the game called off by breaking the tape used to fix the net.

C&C threw bodies forward, and the ref tried to even the game by giving us silly yellow cards. This didn’t trouble Sean K and Andis, who were immense at the back, clearing every cross despite a height disadvantage. C&Cs desperation left gaps, and we exploited them on the counter.

Sub Willis came on to “defend” (which he also did do a pretty good job at too) but (also) found himself in acres of space on the left. He calmly set up Ben Botts, who slotted home his first goal of the season to seal the win. 3-1.

Match Report: “The Invcible Gari”

After a action packed week, Garibaldi travelled to Kettering to play an in-form Weekly Rovers Titans in the final game of League 4.

With the title already secured, we played for an unbeaten record and to ensure that fringe players got their opportunity to strut their stuff. With players such as Sunday’s cup final MOTM Ben Botts not in the squad, 5 of Sundays starters sitting on the bench and Remy playing his Saturday position of RB.

The first 20 and both teams looked nervy, with no real opportunities for either side with each team battling hard for the ball. Eventually, Weekly found the 1st with a shot straight down the middle of the goal after a lovely wing play. Their large crowd roared the young side on, and before the half, they looked the stronger.

In the second half and within 8 minutes, we had made 3 changes. Maz, 5 minutes after coming on, got our equaliser as we started to ramp up the pressure. 2 more changes followed, and players slotted into their usual positions.

We seemed to get unlucky with foul after foul not being given, including several penalty shouts we felt it wasn’t going to be our night. Eventually, we got a soft handball resulting in a pen which Remy slotted home. 2-1

Fair play to Weekly, they wanted it more in the second half and after a cutting ball through they got their equaliser. Gari not wanting a repeat of the game (thanks for the post btw), wanted to finish the league on a high. After a short corner, Remy whipped the ball into the box to find our resident Olivier Giroud (Sean K) to head home. 3-2.

FT and Garibaldi celebrated an Invincible season with a 720p Photo, medals galore, and another Trophy to bring back to the Garibaldi Hotel.

After securing the League 4 title in the week, we headed to Daventry Town for the Northamptonshire FA County Sunday Trophy. A packed minibus including the coaching staff, players, squad members unfortunate to not get in the team, club sponsor, Kevin’s window cleaning services, and the Garibaldi Hotel staff.

We arrived at the Master Abrasives Stadium and warmed up to a growing Garibaldi contingent, including players, friends, family, custom banners, and even a custom baby Gari kit!

The first half kicked off with an enforced early change with Willet’s bling preventing him from starting. Wingers gallantly stepped up to play CDM and was brilliant from the off. In the first 10 minutes, it was back and forth with Rothewell wanting a battle rather than a game of football with Angus getting smashed late, forcing a change, with Willet coming on.

Rothwell soon capitalised, spreading the ball out wide for a cross into the box that their other winger got onto to make it 1-0. We had the greater attacking threat with us only denied by 2 super saves from the keeper, a quality overhead kick from Jacko sailing over, and the post to go into half time 1 down.

A rousing half-time team talk by the Gaffer, Willis, Remy, and Joe Preston, who got us ready for the second half. Less than 10 minutes in, we grabbed the equaliser, great wing play on the right, found Remy, who’s fluffed shot, found Ben Botts with an open goal to finish to a large cheer from our support.

Remy finally grabbed his first of the game not long after to make it 2-1.

A super cross from the left found Maz at the back post with an open goal to aim at. The defender wasn’t going to get there and shoved Maz in the back, Pen, and Red card. Up stepped Remy, and you know the rest. 3-1.

The comeback was seemingly complete, but Remy had to get his customary hattrick. A corner from Angus and Remy had an easy header to make it 4 and get the match ball.

Full Time Whistle to a loud cheer from the Gari faithful, lifting our first cup trophy in our debut season.
