Today was Luke’s biggest match of the year - 194 cadets on the Canal And Rivers Trust National Celebration Of Young People.

Starting for skimmers, he has put his rig in perfectly, the float bobbed under and held for a half a second, then he gave a firm strike into… a gudgeon!

Second chuck, he has again lowered in the rig brilliantly, and the float has dibbed, but this time he gave a silly little strike that barely moved the float! The elastic rattled violently and his hook length and bottom 2 droppers are covered in slime! 🫣😭 Silly boy!

Luckily, he got it together after that, catching 47 fish - a mix of roach, perch and gudgeon along with a small skimmer and a chunky perch.

1 kilo 200g put him joint 21st which of course he is over the moon with. I’ve not got the heart to tell him that lost skimmer would have put him in the top 10!

Again, a fantastically well organised event with loads of medals and trophies, along with a prize for every competitor, helped with sponsorship from Guru.

If you know a young angler, this is the event to take part in - it’s huge and getting bigger every year!

It’s silly season with new poles at the minute with loads of top end ones arriving. As expected, the silly comments have kept everyone amused. These are my favourites and the replies I’ve seen or wish I’d said (if I wasn’t so polite!).

There has never been a better time to buy a new pole!

Today it was the turn of Garbolino to show off their new range - 4 poles, all 16m ranging from £1,049 to £3,399. I’ve had a play with them all and fished with two of them. They are all blinding for the money! The standout factor being weight - they are sooooooo light!

The rate poles are improving at the minute is terrifying. Every pole I test I put alongside my own flagship pole as a benchmark. In three years I’ve watched it go from ‘competitive’ to ‘out of its depth’! The £2k Essential Carp Match is better than my £3.5k model! Keep an eye out for a review in Angling Times very soon.

Next week is the turn of Drennan and the Rigidex Pro. The way things are going, I’m expecting it to be another belter!

Back to Furzton!

I used to fish Furzton in Milton Keynes a lot, but stopped going about 8 years. Zebra mussels caused the water to go clear, which meant heavy w**d growth and patchy fishing.

The mussels seem to have died off, the colour returned and there now seems to be a few fish about, so today I made a return to fish the Frank Swan Memorial match.

My draw between the sluice and the footbridge was always a bit no man’s land - a bit iffy on both pole and feeder. For this reason, I setup both!

Boshing out a load of pellets to 55m at the start with an aim of going on it in the last couple of hours, I’ve started on the pole, feeding worms in a Biogrub and G5 mix.

No fish arrived on the feeder line, but I’ve caught loads of perch on the pole, along with a few decent sized roach and hybrids. Worm heads were best, but I did have a few fish on maggot and caster.

22lb won me the section and was the best weight on my bank. Well done to winner Dave Shults with 80lb of bream from the far bank section. 👏

A really enjoyable day! I’m definitely going to get back on Furzton a bit more next year.
