Lanarkshire federation -Ripon race 5-9-26

We arrive at Ripon in North Lanarkshire for our final race of the season with around 150 miles racing north back into lower Central, Scotland.
The weather again had been changeable in the build up to the weekend with some significant rain throughout Central, Scotland.

The weather on Saturday was good and the convoy of 835 birds were liberated at 09 15hrs in a west wind that appeared to have some North in it at the home end.

This weeks winner took 4 hrs 11 minutes with a tough velocity of 1082ypm for the winner you can expect a difficult race.
Word came through that the birds were struggling to home in decent numbers and with significant gaps on each of the club results wasn't healthy reading.

1st North section,1st Open federation.

The winner this week was recorded into the Airdrie club for Ian Rankin who has been consistently at the top of his clubs results and also the federation averages.

Ian timed a Cheq c**k pigeon to win 1st North section, 1st Open federation for Ian and the icing on the cake was it was also winning the federation Gold Ring Scheme and £520.Think he should be named "Jackpot"

The winner was bred by Bill Traynor of Uddingston club .Sire being a GWP Macaloney he purchased from David Gill who had purchased direct from the Macaloney partnership.
The Dam is a Lambrecht purchased from Richard Gould of Anglesey.
The Dam has bred 3 winners to date.

I contacted Ian to congratulate him on a fantastic performance and get some details of his management of his racers.

The winner has been a very steady pigeon and was sent well motivated sitting eggs. The birds are road trained three times per week and if not road training they are out three a day and called by the whistle.

Ian splits his team in the race programme with this winner not being raced the week before.

He keeps them healthy with using Trident in the water every day from weaning.

Ian would like to thank friend Jim Wood for his help around the loft and road training.

Ian also finishes the season winning 1st North section, 2nd Overall Young Bird Averages ,top flying Ian.

Well done to Ian on your 1st Open federation rounding up a successful season.

Lanarkshire federation ,Ripon race on 5/9/26

1st West section, 7th Open federation winner is David Murphy of Blantyre club, David joined the sport in 2020 his Dad raced in Cambuslang club for many, many years.

He timed a cheq c**k bred from pigeons he received from his cousin Peter Murphy of Po***ck in Glasgow. The Sire is a Vanloon/Stainthorpe/Davidson cross. The Dam is a Vanderabeele that was 6th section from Alnwick 2025.
The winner had five races being very steady up in the top percentage every race. He was raced on semi darkness being on his third flight.

David's workload stops him training his birds as much as he would wish, road training is in the form of federation transporter once per week. The week leading up to the last race he couldnt get any road training, only loft exercising his birds.
They are fed Vanrobaeys young bird exclusive with fats on a Thursday.
Well done Davie and thanks for the details and photos.

1st Centre section 2nd Open federation Ripon ,5/9/26
Graham Brothers, Carluke club.

Andy timed a blue hen out of his well established Vandenabeele/ Merlin/Custer that are very much a Graham strain.
The hen has had five races before Ripon and was sent on Celibate system only getting together with males on a Friday for a couple of hours before basketing.

Feeding a light mixture in the morning and heavier widowhood in the evening with some fats on the Thursday & Friday due to the distance and a strong west wind.
She was lightly trained coupled with some loft flying, with Andy thinking they were handling well.

He says I was fortunate to get one in the mix and having 13 in the top 100.
His returns were good with 24/30 to date and one reported in Wigton, Cumbria.

Andy has had a fabulous season and again hits the cross bar being runner up in the Combine Averages two year on the trot.
He also races in the South Lanarkshire Independent were he has had a very successful season winning Inland, Old Bird, Combine Averages and in the mix for the Young Bird Averages 2026.

Overall Im delighted with the way the birds have performed.

Andy said congratulations to Ian Rankin on winning 1st Open federation this week and Billy Holland on winning the Combine Averages.

1st West sect,1st Open federation,Alnwick 2 29/8/26

This week we return to Alnwick in Northumberland race five on the Lanarkshire calendar. weather at the liberation was perfect and continued excellent on the route back into lower Central, Scotland.

The race controller had the 1380 birds away at 08 00 in no wind, the birds cleared the site well and the race was on.

This weeks winner into the far west of the federation taking 2hrs 10 minutes for its 98 mile journey was for Tom Houston of Westburn near , Cambuslang.
The winning pigeon a Cheq C**k flown on the darkness system recorded a velocity of 1329 beating next in the federation by a impressive 21 ypm.
Recording 1st sect,1st Open federation for Tom.

I contacted Tom to congratulate him on his excellent winner and find out a little more detail on how he achieved such an outstanding performance.
Tom has been in the sport a good number of years and was initially in the Cambuslang club before it folded, joining the nearby Blantyre club.
He said his last 1st Open was in 2004 from Leicester with around 5,000 birds competing.

His winner is a February bred pigeon from a pair of Jos Cools purchased from Louella Pigeon World last year. They have proven an excellent investment with the nest mate also showing excellent form.
The winner has already scored three times in the federation from the five races its competed in.

The pigeon is road trained during the week from Lesmahagow and also has one trainer per week with federation transporter .

The birds are fed on Bamfords Super YB mixture with fats added Thursday for the Saturday race. On return they have Gerdon 1 in the water.

He had 31 of his 40 YB team away and 31 returned.

Overall Tom has been very happy with the racing with excellent returns. Like most he has lost more training than racing.
Well done Tom on a cracking winner and all the best for the last federation race this week.
