Histon batted first but some disciplined bowling from Mark Nunn (2-36), Frank Stennett (1-38), Max Pipe (2-11) & Taheer Isaacs (2-20) then add in two superb run outs from Max Pipe and Histon were bowled out for 159. In reply, a flurry of wickets falling regularly ensured pressure was on in the chase but thankfully Max Pipe (42) & an incredibly calm and composed 34* from Udana Ranathunga guided us home by 2 wickets and secure a third league win of the season… which somehow now sees us top of the league 👀

Batting first on what can politely be described as an “interesting” pitch, valuable runs from Kieran Lloyd (34) alongside several useful 20+ contributions from Michael Ives, Romel Khan, Ollie Green and Chris Pell helped us post a competitive total. In reply, the bowlers completely took over with a superb all-round performance to dismiss the opposition for just 68. Kieran Lloyd (3-11), Chris Pell (2-25) and James Holmes (3-8) did the damage as the 2’s secured another excellent victory.

The Midweek 1’s bowed out of the cup in the first round after being restricted by some very disciplined Sawston bowling. Romel Khan’s 37 was the standout innings in what proved to be a difficult night for the batting unit. In reply, we kept things tight right until the closing stages with Albert Scott (2-27) the pick of the bowlers but credit to Sawston who got over the line on this occasion.

A proper cup tie that went right down to the wire with both sides matching each other score for score before the 2’s edged through on fewer wickets lost to progress into the next round. Safe to say there were a few nervous spectators by the end… 😅

Man of the moment Max Pipe continued his good form with another classy 70, while Albert Scott produced a superb 85. Ziaf Kulasi also chipped in brilliantly with 48 as the runs kept flowing.
In reply, Sawston battled hard to finish on 274-7 but an excellent opening spell from Mark Nunn (3-22) helped keep us firmly in control while Suroor Afzal added two wickets of his own.

The 2’s made it 3 wins from 3 with another convincing performance. After losing the toss, a disciplined bowling display restricted the opposition to 179-9 from their 40 overs, with Kieran Lloyd (2-15) and Jon Malings (2-13) leading the attack.
In reply, Michael Ives on debut anchored the chase superbly with an unbeaten 85, while Ant Bompas added a classy 58 as the lads cruised home with wickets and stress levels comfortably intact.

🏅 𝐏𝐎𝐓𝐌: 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐈𝐯𝐞𝐬

After losing another toss, thankfully skipper Brame’s side ignored the curse and got straight to work.
Brame himself set the tone with a solid 1-28 from his 10 overs but the real headlines belonged to two youngsters on debut.
14-year-old Theo Pipe (2-20) and U13’s player Henry Riches (2-16) both bowled superbly beyond their years as Brantham were dismissed for 139.
In reply, Saurabh Gupta (35) and Kieran Lloyd (41*) calmly guided us home to make it 4 wins from 4 and top spot in Suffolk Cricket League Division 1.

Skipper Kieran Lloyd suffered his first defeat in difficult conditions as a rain-affected chase saw the side fall 20 runs short.
Romel Khan impressed with the ball taking 2-19, while Taheer Isaacs continued his excellent form with a battling 52 in tricky conditions.

Ickleton posted 153-6 from their 20 overs before the 2’s reached 31-1 from 4 overs when the rain arrived in proper British fashion and brought proceedings to an early finish.

A fantastic evening recently at Newmarket Cricket Club as we officially opened our brand-new practice net facility with former England & Essex cricketer Keith Fletcher.

This project simply would not have been possible without the incredible support we’ve received from our community. A huge thank you to Sport England for awarding us a grant, alongside generous donations from Andrew Turner Builders, Rotary Club of Newmarket, Tattersalls, Cheveley Park Stud, Newmedica and the 44 individual donors who helped us raise the capital needed to bring this facility to life.

This new net will play a huge role in developing cricket at the club for years to come from juniors and women’s cricket through to our senior teams.

U11’s Match Report

After the rain cleared, Newmarket Juniors played their first match of the season in a fantastic cricket setting at Histon. With plenty of parents supporting from the boundary, the occasion marked an historic moment for the club as our first ever junior fixture. Taheer led an excellent warm-up before the game, Kieran took on scoring duties and Mark umpired throughout.

There were some excellent performances in the field. Beni, Piyrs and Harry all picked up wickets, while Oliver, Charlie and Harvey bowled well and were unlucky not to be rewarded. Noah, Charlie and Martha both grew in confidence as their spells progressed. Behind the stumps, Harry and Ollie who rotated the gloves looked assured and confident, and Alfie fielded particularly well on the boundary.

Facing a strong Histon bowling attack, the team battled hard with the bat and showed plenty of determination. Harry and Alfie both struck boundaries, while Oliver and Beni also found the rope with well-played shots. As with any new team, there are areas the group will continue to work on particularly communication but the effort and attitude throughout were excellent.

Overall, it was a very encouraging start to the season, full of promise and enthusiasm, and a proud milestone that highlights just how far the club has come.

♦️ Another huge weekend of cricket for Newmarket CC, lots of runs, last over drama and a double century🔥

♦️ Saturday 1st XI lost by 3 wickets
After winning the toss and choosing to bat, we made a promising opening start but some tight bowling from Wisbech pegged us back as wickets fell at regular intervals. However, a superb partnership of 95 between Maxford Pipe (86) and Udana Ranathunga (46) dragged us back into a strong position as we eventually posted 234 all out.

In reply, Wisbech started strongly but an excellent spell from Taheer Isaacs (1-25) and Maxford Pipe (2-24) swung the momentum back our way, leaving the opposition needing 8 an over from the final 12. Skipper Mark Nunn chipped in with two key wickets (2-40) and the game went right down to the wire before Wisbech held their nerve in the final over. A brilliant advert for local cricket and plenty of positives to take despite the narrow defeat.

🏅 Player of the Match: Maxford Pipe

♦️ Saturday 2nd XI won by 2 wickets
After winning the toss and electing to bowl, the opposition made a solid start but once the top order was broken, wickets began to tumble regularly with skipper Joe Barker (3-31) and James Holmes (2-18) leading the way.

In reply, a classy partnership between Kieran Lloyd (74) and Faisal Kabir (32) looked to have put the chase firmly under control before Kabir was bowled, Kieran was cruelly run out via a deflection off the bowler and suddenly nerves were jangling around the boundary.

Thankfully Ollie Green had other ideas, calmly guiding the side home with a composed 40* to secure the club’s second win of the season.

♦️ Sunday 1st XI won by 47 runs
After skipper Tom Brame finally won a toss, he reverted back to what he knows best and elected to bat. What followed was one of the great innings seen at the club for many years.

Kieran Lloyd, who was dropped on just 6, made the opposition pay in brutal fashion as he smashed a sensational double century featuring 24 boundaries and 12 sixes in an extraordinary innings. Supported brilliantly by Mark Nunn (84), the pair added 209 together as we finished on a mammoth 352/5 from 40 overs.

In reply, Copdock came out positively and played their part in an absolute run-fest but key wickets kept us in control throughout. Joe Phillips (2-10) alongside two wickets apiece from Chris Pell, Pardha Maddala and Jon Malings eventually bowled the visitors out for 305.

By the end of the day, the same pitch had produced an astonishing 1,128 runs across two matches over the weekend. Safe to say the bowlers may need an ice bath…

♦️ Midweek 1st XI won by 117 runs
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Albert Scott scored a blistering 68 from just 27 balls. Taheer Isaacs then hit a superb 70* from 48 balls, while Kieran Lloyd added a rapid 43 as we powered our way to 225/3 from 20 overs.

In reply, the bowlers completed the job dismissing the opposition for just 108. Kieran Lloyd (3-6) starred with the ball, while “Mr Wickets” Simon Burgess picked up 2-2.

🏅 Player of the Match: Taheer Isaacs

♦️ Newmarket Ladies lost by 37 runs
A tough afternoon on the road for the Ladies side but another performance that showed improvement. Bowling first, skipper Libby Burton once again led from the front with excellent figures of 3-17, while Sophie Crocombe (1-22) also impressed with the ball.

In reply, Julie Dunger (20) and Libby Burton (15) both played some classy shots during the chase but regular wickets meant the required rate just crept away from the side.

Despite the result, there continues to be huge progress within the group and the team spirit remains brilliant.
