Great day out - trying out your tennis skills

Club Open Day 20 June

The club will hold an open day from 14.00 to 17.00 on Saturday 20 June. Everyone is welcome and we’ll have lots of games throughout the day, organised by coach Sam and his team.

The Open Day is one of the most important days in our annual calendar and is a great chance to meet other members. It’s also the perfect chance for potential members to come along and try out tennis, our courts and find out more about the club.
There is also an offer for any new members who come along to sign up on the day.

Offer prices for 2026-2027 membership:

Senior £60 (normally £80)
Junior (for ages 8-18) £30 (normally £40; membership is free for 7 and under)
Family £125 (normally £170)

Hi everyone - dates are now out for our Summer Tennis Camps!

Week 1: 6 - 10 July
Week 2: 20 - 24 July
Week 3: 17 - 21 August

Under 7s camp runs from 10.00 - 12.00 and the camp for 7+ runs from 12.00 - 15.00.

"Tennis players live 9.7 years longer than sedentary people.

Not 9.7 months. 9.7 years. Nearly a decade.

The Copenhagen City Heart Study tracked 8,577 people for 25 years and ranked every sport by how much life it adds.

Badminton: 6.2 years. Soccer: 4.7. Cycling: 3.7. Swimming: 3.4. Jogging: 3.2.

Tennis almost triples jogging.

A separate study of 80,000 adults found racket sports cut all-cause mortality by 47% and cardiovascular death by 56%. Swimming hit 41%. Aerobics hit 36%."

Hi everyone,

April marks the start of a new membership year for Newcastle Tennis Club, and we have a great programme of activities for junior and senior members.

Regular lessons for both junior and senior members will restart next week after the Easter break, and we have a friendly club tournament coming up soon. We’re also restarting our internal Box League this month, and there will be lots of opportunities to represent the club in various local leagues in the months ahead.

We’re excited that we’ve got new, high quality lights installed in time for the new year, which have greatly expanded the availability of courts in the evenings and they’ve received excellent reviews from members so far. We’ve also got a new key fob system about to launch which will make accessing the courts easier, as well as ensuring members can make use of the toilet facilities in the clubhouse.

Dear Members of the Newcastle Tennis Club,

We would like to share some important updates about the Club.

Newcastle Tennis Club AGM - 23rd February 2026

This year’s AGM is on Monday 23rd February at 7pm. The venue is to be confirmed, more details will follow. Please see the Agenda below.

The Committee would encourage members to attend this meeting as it is important for the governance of the Club. As usual, all sitting Committee members stand down and an election is held to appoint the incoming Committee.

As always, the Committee would very much welcome new volunteers to help run the Club, both on the Committee and serving as Child Protection Officers. Committee roles are as follows:

Members are advised that work has begun this week on upgrading our floodlights. The courts will remain closed while this work takes place. We estimate they will be closed for around a week, but we will keep you informed if it looks like it will be longer than this.

We look forward to having the new lights operational soon, which will greatly improve the playing conditions for members, as well as increasing the number of courts that can be used in the evenings.

Many thanks to all the club members who joined for our Halloween tournament! The tournament was a great success with lots of fun and even a few fancy dress costumes. The event was won on the day by Team Shimna, made up of Patricia, John, Alan and Paddy.

As well as a fun day for club members, the tournament was also a fundraiser and we managed to raise over £300 for Shimna Stars Special Olympics club, which offers support, sport, recreation, social interaction and learning to those with an intellectual disability in the Down area: https://www.facebook.com/shimnastars

Membership Offer!

We're offering anyone interested in joining the chance to sign up for Newcastle Tennis Club at 50% the normal annual fee. We encourage current members to share this information with anyone you think might be interested in joining.

Our annual membership runs from 1st April - 31st March. New
members for the 2025-26 season can now join at a discounted fee for the period through to 31st March 2026:

Senior membership: £30 (normally £60)
Junior membership 8-18 yrs: £15 (normally £30)
Students: £15 (normally £30)
Family membership: £70 (normally £140).

It is still free for 7 years and under to join for free with a 'Junior Development' membership.

Newcastle Tennis Club played host to the Fraser Homes Newcastle Junior Tour 200 tournament on 9-10 August. In total, 68 players participated, from twenty two tennis clubs throughout the country in an amazing celebration of young sporting talent. A massive congratulations to all players who took to the court over the weekend, particularly those who travelled from Enniskillen, Slane, Naas, Dublin, Wicklow and Sligo to be part of the tournament. You made it unforgettable! Over 100 matches were played across the two days, with boys and girls competing in the following categories U12, U14, U16 and U18.

This was the first time Newcastle Tennis Club had hosted an official Tennis Ulster event, and everything ran smoothly thanks to the organisation of club coach Sam Clegg. We are also very grateful to long-term club member Michael Flanigan, who now works at Tennis Ireland. Sam and Michael have many times discussed whether it would be possible for NTC to host an official Tennis Ulster event, and so it’s fantastic to see these plans made real. Michael was on hand throughout the tournament to manage the draw and scores, with competing players getting points towards their Tennis Ireland rankings. Many other members of the club and committee members were involved in supporting the planning and running of the tournament, and we are sincerely grateful for all their efforts.

There were lots of spectators who came along to watch the matches that were consistently of very high quality. Fraser Homes was delighted to sponsor the tournament and we thank them for their generous sponsorship. We are also grateful to Lidl Newcastle who provided refreshments for the players. We also thank the Mourne Observer and their photographer Suzanne who took the photos in this post. The Mourne Observer also included a great update in their print edition.

Newcastle Tennis Club junior players were well represented in the tournament, and congratulations go to local players Patrick Flanigan, who won the U18s Boys Singles title and Maggie McCann, who won the U18 Girls Singles title, edging out another Newcastle player, Kacie Doran, who took the runner-up prize.
