🔴⚫️ Rutherford U10’s Match Report 🔴⚫️
The girls faced Darlington in a friendly on Saturday.
They only had the bare 7 today due to last minute illnesses. They started strong and dominated the play for the first 10 minutes finding themselves unlucky not to take the lead, instead striker Poppy and Freya managed to hit the cross bar and post. We somehow found ourselves vulnerable to ‘the fox in the box’ in which on a couple of occasions Darlingtons striker was way past our defence just waiting for a ball through. Although it took the girls a while to click on to this Megan and Olivia defended excellently, stopping them balls through to the striker, on one occasion it got though and surely enough she scored, going into half time 1-0 down was hard to take considering how well the girls had played their first half, never the less a positive team talk and out the girls went with fire in their belly’s and boy did it show.
It didn’t take long for the girls to start creating chances, Jen, Sherina, Poppy and Freya linked up really well. Defensively we were solid, Megan man marked their ‘fox in the box’ and defending partner Sophie stopped everything going towards goal. The girls won a throw in, Sophie (with her super sonic throws) took the throw getting it into the box and surely enough Poppy finished it equalising the game. The girls continued to pressure with some impressive passing and good balls from the midfield to the strikers. Taking nothing away from Darlington they were a strong team and tried pushing forward, however much to their frustrations Sophie cleared anything that came into her path and anything that didn’t, Megan was there for.
Our second goal from a good ball through to Poppy for took a few touches before poking it home to take the lead. Soon after the girls found their third goal this time from Jen, Jen has battled and battled over the last few weeks and hard work has paid off as she got her well deserved goal. A change in positions saw Poppy go in goal for the final 15 minutes, that didn’t stop the girls though as they continued to counter.
Darlington got through a few times and we found ourselves defending corners, the girls dealt with this well. Another corner came in and a Darlington player volleyed it smashing the back of the net, Jordan Pickford wouldn’t have saved that one. The girls carried on and their 4th goal came from Freya who, I quote, at half time said ‘I can’t score today’ in which she was told theres no such word as can’t and once again the coaches proved right as she added yet another goal to her impressive tally for the season.
The game finished 4-2 to Rutherford and player of the match was awarded to both Sophie and Megan for their solid performances today. This was by no stretch of the imagination an easy game, however the way Megan and Sophie defended was unbelievable to see, seeing them cut out most of the attacking play from the opposition. Thanks to all the girls involved they carried on, even when they needed a break due to having no subs. Well done girls 🔴⚫️⚽️
