A tough afternoon at the Oaklands, Ponthir! A make shift team, and a ref that had a bigger impact on the game then the players. Ponthir started strongly with two huge men up front, holding up the ball and playing it about with pent struggling to get hold of the ball to play. A soft ball to hand in the box gave Ponthir a penalty and really got Pents backs up. The penalty was calmly slotted home and things started to go pear shaped. A bit of verbals after a soft tackle added to the frustrations and the next cross into the box ended in a scuffle and an undeserved red for Pent. Neil then took a bang to head after making an excellent save but came off worse for wear after his head made contact with the ground, bringing the first half to and early end to give him time to recover. A quick reshuffle at half time, a few personnel changes and a nothing to lose, fighting attitude from Pent saw us finally keep the ball on the deck, start playing it about and saw us regularly making some ground up the pitch and the chances start to come. The ref repaid the soft first half penalty for a similar infringement but the keeper made a great stop to keep a clean sheet. Tough afternoon but the lads stuck to it and worked their nuts off, 5-0 at the finish

Superb performance by the lads today, away to big Barry Town afc vets in the Sunshine. Pent started well hassling the Barry attack and catching them offside time after time, frustrating them into mistakes. Pent struck first after a cracking delivery by Bodman to the back post for Jenks to hammer a header toward goals, a great save by the keeper fell for Birdie to smash home the first of the day and give us the lead at half time. It was a back and fore second half with the lads playing well off Birdie up top and creating lots of chances. Birdie then struck again with a bit of magic footwork in the box to fox the keeper and slot home. The ref then F #%cked us over for the final 20 minutes missing an obvious corner for Pent which then lead to a Barry attack and a soft penalty given which Barry slotted home in the corner. Barry equalised with 10 mins to go via a dodgy quick free kick on the edge of the box to level up the scores. The team pulled together and worked hard for the final 10 to hold out Barry for the draw 2-2 at the end

The Vets traveled to Cardiff university Sports field on Sunday for our first match of the new year, facing Cardiff Corinthians. The Mawr were mesmerised on arrival by the American Football laying into each other, before the realisation that we’d have to climb 2 flights of stairs to the changing room after playing 90 minutes hit hard. S***t & Chalky picked the starting 11 from the array of walking wounded in front of them and opted for a 4-5-1 to save the lads legs where they could

Corries had the bulk of the early possession but were kept out by a resilient back 4 and Nelly safe hands. Corries had an early shout for a penalty after Corries number 9 went all “Tom Daley” in the box but the referee laughed and waved it away. The Mawr settled and started to knock it about a bit getting nipper, jenks, Eddie & birdie further up the field but only managed a few free kicks for their efforts. Corries took the lead on the break and unfortunately it was one way traffic until half time, going in 2 goals to the good.
Second half started the same as the first with the Corries having the bulk of the ball in the Mawr half, before putting the game beyond reach with their third goal of the day. The Mawr made a personnel and tactical change soon after and stared to get some joy up the right hand side of the field, with Birdie and jenks holding the ball well and starting to get some chances. Birdie struck on the 64th minute with a great finish from a tight angle in the box to give the Mawr hope, but by then we were all knackered!! Corries kept coming before an mis hit lead to goals number 4, then a speculative overhead slash bounced in off the post to seal our fate!! 7-1 at the final whistle
