Plain English Campaign The Campaign is able to fund its activities by offering a variety of commercial services such as editing, training and testing.

Plain English Campaign takes up the grievances of people who have been baffled by the bureaucratic language, small print and legalese of official information and promotes the use of plain language by presenting awards, hosting international conferences and funding research projects. It also allows its seal of approval, the Crystal Mark, to be printed on those documents which it finds have been made as clear as possible. This mark now appears on over 18300 documents worldwide and is the only internationally recognised mark of its kind. It now acts as a consultant for just about every major organisation in the UK as well as for many others abroad. These include IBM in the USA, the United Nations in Switzerland and Italy, Microsoft in Australia, AMP Assurance in New Zealand, Momentum Assurance in South Africa, Hoechst in Germany, and PricewaterhouseCoopers in Russia.

The woman who started it all ❤️

Every month we celebrate a new Wondrous Face at the entrance to our Wondrous Place gallery. For this month, we shine a spotlight on activist and author Chrissie Maher.

Chrissie Maher grew up in Tuebrook and largely missed out on formal education at school. She later learned to read properly in her late teens. She founded the UK’s first community newspaper the Tuebrook Bugle in 1971.
In 1979, Chrissie launched the Plain English Campaign by publicly shredding confusing government forms in Parliament Square, London, in protest at bureaucratic language that prevented ordinary people from understanding their rights.
Chrissie received an OBE in 1994 for services to communication and consumer rights, and in 2010 was awarded an Honorary Fellowship for services to communication from Liverpool John Moores University.
