🌞 BPQL SUMMER IS HERE! 🌞

Season One may be over, but BPQL isn't taking the summer off!

We've got three special events lined up over the summer to keep the quizzes flowing before we return for Season Two on the first Sunday in September.

🏆⚽ Sunday 21st June – Season One Awards & World Cup Quiz (FREE ENTRY)

We'll be handing out the awards from our inaugural season before diving into a special quiz loosely based on the Football World Cup. Don't worry – this isn't a football quiz and no football knowledge is required. Think World Cup atmosphere, BPQL style!

📝 Sunday 19th July – Team Quiz

A special team event written by none other than our Season One champion John Robinson. If you've ever wondered what goes on inside John's quiz-writing brain, here's your chance to find out!

🎯 Sunday 16th August – Buzzer Quiz

Andrew Burford takes centre stage for a buzzer quiz that promises plenty of quick-fire questions, fast reactions and a bit of friendly rivalry.

Further details for both events will follow in due course.

As we head towards Season Two, these events are a chance to get together, have a laugh, enjoy some great quizzing and hopefully tempt a few new faces to join us when the league returns in September.

A huge thank you to The Jewellers Arms, who have once again agreed to partner with BPQL for Season Two. It's a fantastic venue, they've been brilliant supporters of the league, and we're delighted to be continuing the partnership.

So get the dates in your diary:

📅 21st June – Awards Presentation & World Cup Quiz (FREE ENTRY)
📅 19th July – Team Quiz
📅 16th August – Buzzer Quiz
📅 First Sunday in September – BPQL Season Two begins!

We're only just getting started. See you there!

BIRMINGHAM PREMIER QUIZ LEAGUE – SEASON ONE COMPLETE 🧠🏆

What a way to finish.

A brilliant final night on Sunday and a really fitting end to what has honestly been a fantastic first season for BPQL.

Going into Week 8 there was still plenty to play for, and the standard stayed high right until the end.

John Larkin produced a superb performance to take the final nightly win with 51, finishing the season strongly and comfortably securing second place overall.

Andrew Burford also finished strongly with 44 to secure the final podium place overall after a really consistent campaign, while Chris Last rounded things off with one of his best performances of the season to take third on the night.

Final Top 3 Overall:
🥇 John Robinson
🥈 John Larkin
🥉 Andrew Burford

At the top overall though, Season One belongs to John Robinson.

Six wins from seven appearances, a 50+ average across the season, and a level of consistency nobody else could quite match. A seriously impressive campaign and a deserved first BPQL champion.

But honestly, what’s pleased me most over these last eight weeks isn’t just the scores or league table.

When I launched Birmingham Premier Quiz League, I genuinely didn’t know how many people would buy into the idea of a dedicated individual quiz league in Birmingham. The support has honestly been brilliant.

We’ve had Mastermind champions, experienced quizzers, newer players giving it a go for the first time, some properly tough sets, close finishes, great discussions after nights, and a really good atmosphere every single week.

A massive thank you to everybody who has:
• Played
• Shared posts
• Brought people along
• Supported the idea
• Given feedback
• Helped spread the word

It genuinely means a lot.

Season 2 will return in September.

Before then though, BPQL isn’t disappearing for the summer. We’ll have standalone events, special quiz nights and other competitions over the next few months for people to come down and give it a try before the new season begins.

So if you’ve been following online but haven’t played yet — there’ll be opportunities coming very soon.

Thanks again everyone.

See you soon. 🧠

BIRMINGHAM PREMIER QUIZ LEAGUE – WEEK 7

Another strong night at BPQL and another night where the league table took a few more twists heading into the final fixture.

This one maybe didn’t have the same tight bunching at the very top as Week 6, but it still felt competitive all night and there were some big swings across the table.

Once again, John Robinson showed why he’s top of the standings.

A huge 10-point Elite Round — the highest of the night — proved decisive and helped him pull clear for a sixth win overall. That Elite performance really created the gap this week and once he got ahead, nobody could quite reel him back in.

Behind him though, the battle for the podium absolutely came to life.

Andrew Burford produced a really solid night to take second with 37 and that now puts him in a strong position for the final podium place heading into the last week.

Chris Grandison kept himself firmly in contention with another steady score, while Claire Reynolds, Chris Last and John Larkin all finished tied on 31 in one of the closest finishes we’ve had this season.

For John Larkin, it was probably the first slightly frustrating night after such a strong campaign overall. He still sits second in the table, but the gap to Robinson now looks a tough one to close with one fixture left.

There were definitely signs this week of the cumulative difficulty and pressure starting to tell a little across the room. An extremely tough Medical Science round caused a few headaches and there were a number of scores lower than normal across the field. But that’s part of what makes the format work — consistency across multiple weeks matters just as much as one huge performance.

League-wise, John Robinson now looks in complete control at the top. Six wins from seven appearances and still averaging over 50 a night is seriously impressive going at this level.

The real focus now is the fight for that final podium spot.

Andrew Burford currently holds it, but Chris Grandison and Claire Reynolds are still within touching distance depending on how the final week plays out and how the Top 4 totals fall.

And now it all comes down to one final night.

📅 Sunday 17th May – Final Fixture

One last set. One last Elite Round. Final standings, podium places and bragging rights all still to be settled.

If you’ve been thinking about coming down and giving BPQL a go, this is the night to do it. The standard has been brilliant all season, the atmosphere has grown week by week, and the support everyone has shown for something completely new has honestly been class.

A massive thank you to everybody who has played, supported, shared posts, brought people along and helped build the league over these first seven weeks.

One more to go.

BIRMINGHAM PREMIER QUIZ LEAGUE – WEEK 6

Really good night this week — probably one of the tightest we’ve had.

At halfway it was properly in the balance. John Robinson, Claire Reynolds and John Larkin all right there, no one able to get any sort of gap. It felt like it was going to come down to the last few questions.

Second half is where it shifted slightly.

John Robinson just did what he’s done all season — stayed solid, picked up the marks others didn’t, and when a couple of scores dipped around him he took advantage. He was really made to work for it this week, but that’s what got him over the line again for win number five.

The 51 doesn’t look miles clear on paper, but it was close all night. Claire Reynolds and John Larkin both on 48 tells you exactly how tight it was — one or two swings and it’s a different result.

There were a few lower scores knocking about as well. Not massively surprising — the set did its job and if you lost concentration for a round it showed. That’s the standard we want.

League-wise, John Robinson is in a strong place now. The average backs it up as well — he’s not just nicking wins, he’s consistently up there every week.

John Larkin holds second, but the interesting bit is just behind that. The final podium place is wide open — Andrew Burford, Chris Grandison and Claire Reynolds all within touching distance, and with only the best four scores counting, that can flip very quickly over the last two weeks.

We’ve got the Bank Holiday off now, so a bit of a break.

Back on 10th May, then 17th May for the final night.

Still plenty to play for — especially that final podium spot.

BPQL – Week 5

Sunday had a slightly different feel to it. Not overly tough, but not one where you could drift — a couple of rounds where you had to stay switched on or you’d quietly lose ground.

At the top, John Robinson took it again with 56, making it four wins from five. It was another controlled performance, and crucially it moves him to the top of the league at this stage.

Andrew Burford and Chris Last both finished on 47, strong scores on the night and both in contention without quite finding the extra few points to push on.

Chris Grandison and Claire Reynolds followed on 45 — solid, well-balanced scoring that keeps things moving.

Further down, there was more spread. A couple of rounds did the separating and once points went, they were difficult to recover.

League-wise, it’s tightened up a bit.

John Robinson now leads, with a very strong set of four scores already in place. Chris Grandison drops just behind — five appearances on the board, so his position now is about improving what he’s got rather than adding to it.

Andrew Burford sits third with a strong average and still room to push higher, while Claire Reynolds is quietly building a competitive set just behind.

There’s a bit of a gap forming after that, but with best 4 scores counting and three weeks left, it’s still open enough — one big score can shift things quickly, especially for those who haven’t yet filled their four scores.

Questions and answers attached as usual.

Week 6 this Sunday at The Jewellers Arms.
£9 advance / £10 on the door, and the Try for a Fiver still there if it’s your first go.
