That rounded back you see in the top row? It’s not just getting older. And it’s not inevitable.
I know how many women assume this is just what happens. That it’s genetic. That if their mum or aunt developed that forward curve, it will happen to them too.
It doesn’t have to.
What often sits underneath this is bone loss in the spine.
As bones lose strength, the vertebrae can develop small compression fractures. These are tiny changes where the bone loses height, and they are not always painful, so many women do not realise it is happening.
Over time, these changes can affect the shape of the spine and lead to a more rounded upper back.
The good news is that bone is living tissue. It responds to load.
Strength training, along with appropriate impact, helps stimulate bone and strengthen the muscles that support the spine. This is one of the most effective ways to protect your posture, your height, and your independence as you get older.
The women in the bottom row are not just lucky. They have given their bodies a reason to stay strong, consistently, over time.
That option is still available. At any age.
If posture changes are starting to worry you, or you have been told your bone density is low, this is exactly what I help women work on.
