Good fight from the lads, had a good few chances what could’ve made the scoreline look a little bit better, but proud of the lads, didn’t stop fighting till the end.

⚽️ Mexborough Division 2 ⚽️

This week the lads travel away to face The New Bank FC.

After a solid performance and securing a point against a good Queens head team last week, the lads are buzzing and can’t wait to fight for the league points.

Coming from last week all we asked from the lads today was character, effort and to remember it's fun.

The lads made sure that message wasnt on deaf ears and ran their socks off for 90 minutes.

Admitidely we started the shakier of the two sides and could of found ourselves a couple of goals down inside the first 10 but a few great saves by eventual MOTM Josh Johnston and some good blocks defensively and a bit of luck with Queens finishing one hitting our post and one I think our strikers could of scored. All that to one side though and effort was been applied beautifully even when the football was sloppy we worked hard to get it back and keep it out of our net. Brandon Jones nearly gave us a lead with a shot from a fully 40 yards the dip was a little late though, 0.0 at half time and a bit of a talking to from Glynn about the way we are treating the ball and a change of formation.

Lads listened and started to treat the ball less like a hot potato and more like a football, we created some lovely chances but their keeper was quick off his line a few times and our final ball seemed it would get cut out all day. Lads kept plucking away though and the defensive work was matched by the trying up top. Eventually pressure cracked and they gave us a free kick I'd of told our lads off for giving, upstepped what seemed to be Shaun first and the gaffer told him to leave it to Jamie Ord with the word of don't let me down in his ear he wrapped it far corner beautifully 1.0 to the Masons. More fighting and scrappy football between the two sides and this time pressure got to our lads and Chris Hirst handled in a silly way but did claim he was outside the box either way penalty, Josh Johnston again with the save MOTM was been earned here even though Shaun was playing the best I've seen all season from him too. We thought we had been left off the hook and was going to take the three points but to complete Chris's drop off after the pen he slotted it neatly past a red faced Josh. 1.1 do we give up and take it now, no we bloody don't we are the Masons and we created the better chances in the last 10 despite been let off the hook with what I thought was a pen when our keeper karate kicked their forward, the last 2 chances stood out with Shaun attempting an overhead kick from 20 yard and nearly pulled it off and Jaydan who was very unlucky with his run as the keeper matched it and blocked the shot with not many kicks of the ball left.

MOTM Josh Johnston

Special mentions, Brandon gave a different aspect up top, Shaun seemed back to himself today and enjoyed a little bit more very unlucky Josh had MOTM, Ty and Tom at full back never give up,, George is now named Duracell and Ellis cleaned up lovely sometimes today. Let's not forget how good Ordys free kick was and if we were a bit quicker sometimes I believe he would of had an assist and Jaydan well done with your crossing today unfortunate not to land to one of ours.

Onto next week and we improve again boys well done with the draw but speaks volumes that we draw with a side that beat us badly last season and some of the lads think they could of done better and that's the attitude we want you to bring.

Cross Keys win 4-3 on pens.

After today I think we all need to realise how far as a team we have come together, now that's out of there let's start.

If I ever see these lads play like that again in the first 25 minutes of a game I'd ask for the lot to be dropped, No passing no movement, players with legs still in concrete, what could go wrong did and it very quickly got ugly, we can all get on about the keeper been on the half way line for the first and I don't know what happened on the second but nobody wanted it in our box, granted there was nothing we could do with the 3rd was a lovely strike into the top bins but at that point we were like a team who didn't know each other.

What we did show after that was the biggest set of balls I've seen us produce to come in at half time 3-2 down felt like a disjustice on us and the second half started similar to the first with a quick goal for them back to 4.2 well we tried and now it's done. Well that's what the feeling was on the touchline but games are not played on the touchline and the lads gave everything to be back at it and go 5-4 up.

Cross Keys kept fighting in a similar vain take nothing away from them here and it showed a bit of a silly challenge for the first but certainly not last penalty of the game, we did feel harsh as the ref played on for a full 3 seconds and let them shoot before deciding the shot wasn't good enough they needed another go ah well pen it is 5-5, with trying to attack for the win in the last 3 minutes we were back to losing at 6.5 great effort lads we go again next week and they was in again for 7.5 but Ordy got the vital save. Glynn then sent big Chris up top and in the final action of the 90 his big head (half glasses) put it at 6-6.

No extra time in this cup which I feel would of benefited us more as the legs in the aging opponent were showing towards the end.

Penalties is the lottery we put ourselves in as we are more then good enough to get job done in 90.

The shootout causes crazy events at times and missing the penalties today was Big Chris Hirst who I'd of bet my 3.5 on scoring his and young Ben who was brave enough to take a pen in his first ever men's shootout big balls lad and made even worse the fact Mr Fez heaped pressure on him more unlucky boys and we know we need to start better in games as sometimes we will not get back like we did today.

Would be even more disappointing if the performance from that first 25 carried on for the full match but for showing bollox and getting yourself out of s**t multiple times hats off and hard luck to my boys today.

Special mentions, George and Chris Fairclough were the legs today absolutely amazing in the centre if touch wasn't there a couple of times effort and application made up for it, Dan your a menace and with Cam you can draw a great partnership 2 for Cam and Hattrick for Dan brilliant lads every time we scored Cam had ball under his arm on way back to half way and Dans red face as he runs tells his effort, unfortunate with Shaun hitting the post and we couldn't find that final ball sometimes.

Again last season we'd of lost 10.2 when they went 4.2 up just after the half but we didn't and we were the unlucky ones today it could of been them that was the unlucky ones and that itself tells you the game, great advertising for the Mexborough league that game.

Onto next week let's keep that spirit of the 90 in us and forget the shootout
