Dowlais ladies got the weekend off to a great start with a win over Cardiff Uni! Captain Jane Bow shares her thoughts
Dowlais travelled to Llanrhymney under clear blue skies, with excellent conditions for hockey. They started the match strongly, dominating the first half with high energy and good structure from defence through to the forward line. Calm and intelligent play allowed Dowlais to win several penalty corners, but they were unlucky not to convert any of these early opportunities.
Cardiff responded in the second half by applying greater pressure in an attempt to unsettle their visitors. However, Dowlais remained solid in defence, tackling well and clearing the ball effectively from deep positions to limit Cardiff’s chances.
In the final 15 minutes, Dowlais raised the intensity again, covering more ground and attacking with aggression. Strong passing between the midfield and forward line created momentum going forward. Their persistence paid off when Dowlais earned a penalty corner late in the half. From the top of the D, Jane Bow delivered the ball to the back post where Katherine Pass was perfectly placed to finish with a superb tip-in, securing the decisive goal.
Holly Thomas worked tirelessly in midfield throughout the match, breaking up Cardiff’s play and launching attacks for Dowlais. Her outstanding performance earned her a well-deserved Player of the Match award 💚🏑
