No Guard Bad Working Practise

An HSE inspector found this mobile circular table saw in use on a domestic refurbishment site in Edinburgh without a guard and without on-tool extraction creating excessive dust and putting workers’ health at risk. While operatives had face-fitted masks, there was no local exhaust ventilation (LEV) available. To ensure standards were improved, enforcement action was taken against both the principal contractor for the site and the contractor

Bad Working Example

In the Yorkshire Dales, an inspector found a worker cutting concrete blocks for a shop extension. Although the worker was wearing an FFP3 mask to protect himself; there was no water suppression in use to protect nearby site visitors and unmasked workers from the significant amount of Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) dust this activity was producing. As RCS is linked to lung cancer, strong enforcement action was taken to ensure all would be protected moving forward

Should Employers be taking a gendered approach to managing stress and mental health
Taking a gendered approach to the management of any health and safety risk is relatively rare. Is the case made out that such an approach would work for stress and mental health?
How many times has this approach has been adopted in practice? How many readers work within organisations that assess manual handling tasks based on the gender of those individuals performing them? Is there any evidence of women being prohibited from lifting items that men are otherwise permitted to?

Good Working Practise

An inspector witnessed this example of good working practice on a construction site in the West Midlands. These blocks had been previously lifted onto the loading bay on the first floor via a telehandler. As demonstrated in the photograph; they were then split down on to individual pallets ready to be delivered close to where bricklayers were working with the use of an all-terrain pallet truck. The splitting down required some twisting and stacking but this was rotated amongst workers and didn’t take long. The sensible measures put in place were planned to save time and reduce the need to lift, handle and carry the blocks around site, protecting workers from the risk of developing hes, pains and discomfort in muscles and joints known as musculoskeletal disorders.
