Some of our students stayed behind for a little bit of extra weapons work last night: a few shots of the first tonfa kata.
The tonfa is a traditional Okinawan weapon, originally a tool used for grinding grain. It consists of a straight rod with a perpendicular handle attached about a third of the way down. Typically made of wood, it should be about the length of the user's forearm. The tonfa is usually used in pairs and is known for its defensive capabilities, particularly in blocking and redirecting attacks.. It's one of the weapons in Kobudo, the martial arts weapons system that we study as part of our Kazoku jujitsu syllabus.
If you fancy having a go, come and join us on a Wednesday night, 7.30pm, at Furze Platt War Memorial Hall in Maidenhead. First lesson free.

Kazushi: The Principle of Unbalancing in Martial Arts

In martial arts, kazushi is the foundational principle of breaking an opponent's balance to gain control and create openings for technique. Kazushi emphasizes that effective techniques often begin not with force, but with disruption. By subtly shifting an opponent's center of gravity—through push, pull, rotation, or timing—the martial artist creates a moment of vulnerability.

Rather than meeting strength with strength, kazushi exploits human biomechanics and reflexes. It is the moment when an opponent can no longer resist effectively, making throws, joint locks, or strikes far easier to execute. Mastery of kazushi transforms physical combat into an art of timing, sensitivity, and strategy—where control is gained not by overpowering, but by outbalancing.

Come and learn how kazushi can work for you with Kazoku Jujitsu at Furze Platt War Memorial Hall at 7.30pm on a Wednesday night. First lesson free.

What is Japanese Jujitsu?

**Japanese Jujitsu vs. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: What’s the Difference?**

When people hear "Jujitsu," they often think of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). But did you know that BJJ actually evolved from traditional Japanese Jujitsu (JJJ)? While both are highly effective martial arts, they serve different purposes.

🇯🇵 **Japanese Jujitsu (JJJ)** is the original battlefield art of the samurai, designed for **self-defence in real-world situations**. It includes:
✅ Strikes (punches, kicks, elbows)
✅ Throws and joint locks
✅ Ground control and submissions
✅ Weapons defence

🇧🇷 **Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)** is a modern evolution that focuses primarily on **ground fighting and sport competition**, with an emphasis on:
✅ Positional control
✅ Submissions
✅ Grappling without strikes

**Why Choose Japanese Jujitsu?**
✔️ **Self-Defense Ready** – Teaches real-life combat skills against both armed and unarmed opponents.
✔️ **More Versatile** – Combines stand-up and ground techniques, making it practical for all situations.
✔️ **Efficient for All Ages** – Leverages technique over brute strength.
✔️ **Rooted in Tradition** – Connects you to the ancient warrior spirit of the samurai.

BJJ is excellent for sport and one-on-one grappling, but **if you're looking for a complete self-defence system**, Japanese Jujitsu offers **a more well-rounded approach**.
