“You’re so lucky. You are a woman in football.”
And yes… there is so much to be grateful for.
But I quickly realised how lonely and difficult life could be in football.
Just like anything else, there are positives and negatives. But being in the sports world demands more than most people see.
If you’re a female footballer, first of all… you are amazing. ❤️
And best of luck for the new season, wherever you are playing. ✨️
Last season, I worked with female athletes through some of the most difficult transitions — ones you don’t necessarily see in other sectors.
📌 Retirement.
Much earlier than most people. And when football has been such a huge part of who you are, your whole identity has to shift.
It’s not just a job.
📌 Becoming a mum.
Parental leave. Balance. Your relationship with your team. Understanding when you’re expected to perform for your club, your team and your supporters.
This is huge.
📌 Financial and career worries.
Female footballers aren’t always thinking about where to make investments.
Many are holding down two jobs and worrying about what their future looks like when football ends.
📌 Being a woman.
Juggling home, family, work, sport… and somehow still feeling like you’re enough, whilst feeling like a burden for chasing your dreams towards your support network.
📌 And then there’s that strange place of living between fear and hope.
📌 Never wanting to say goodbye to the sport you love, while sometimes struggling to keep everything together.
📣 And I haven’t even mentioned performance!
Because behind every player is a woman.
And sometimes the woman behind the performance needs just as much support as the athlete everyone sees.
Isn’t it funny how, from the outside, it can all look so different?
“Wowww… you must love it.”
“You’re so lucky.”
And maybe she is.
But that doesn’t mean it’s easy. 🌻
