Hi – I’m Helen and I’m honoured to have been elected BVLGBT+ President for 2026-2027. Big footsteps to fill following the phenomenal work of previous Presidents.

We are here for all of the veterinary profession; students, nurses,
receptionists, care assistants etc. Please visit our website www.bvlgbt.org and join if you haven’t already – every voice counts.

In a world currently amplifying division, where news and social media seek to polarise opinion and normalise extremism, I hope we as a community can collaborate, work together and strive to educate/enlighten. It takes all of us to be stronger together.
And – because we are LGBT+ - definitely involves plenty of fun!!

🏳️‍🌈 To celebrate we're featuring Q&As with some key role models. This week, Liverpool vet student Noel Hughes shares his experiences studying for his veterinary degree.

"I have tried to promote positivity and inclusiveness in the society. I have written a sexual health guide for q***r people, and there is also a q***r directory of Liverpool. This has information on everything gay in the city. It has brought me a lot more confidence and has allowed other students to make more q***r friends outside their friendship group and among different year groups. I feel like it’s the backbone for the q***r community at Liverpool’s vet school."

Location: YHA Edale Activity Centre
Dates: 17th-19th April
Cost: £50 per person (£25 for students)

Included in your ticket:
Full board, which means breakfast, packed lunches and evening meals
Accommodation in multi-bed dormitory style rooms with shared shower and toilet facilities
N.B. We will only be sharing rooms with those from our group. Partners are welcome.
Activities TBC but will include walks, hopefully yoga, and socialising.
Our AGM will also be taking place on the Sunday, lasting approximately 1 hour.

Closest train station is Edale, 1.7 miles away from the YHA
Lift shares can be organised through our WhatsApp group
Students can request a travel grant of up to £50 to cover costs

Transgender Day of Remembrance - Thursday 20th November

Today, we pause to honour the lives of trans people who have been taken by violence and discrimination. Transgender Day of Remembrance is a solemn reminder of the deep injustices the trans community continues to face.

At BVLGBT+, we stand firmly beside our trans colleagues, friends, and community members. At a time when uncertainty and oppression persist, our commitment to solidarity, safety, and dignity for trans people is unwavering.

We invite you to take a moment to read this poem by British trans artist Pauline Smith, “Being Transgender: The Hurt and The Pain” May her words offer space for remembrance and reflection.

Being Transgender: The Hurt and The Pain

Trans am I
As are my sisters brothers
And non binary folk
She he they
All of us the T in LGBT

Will toilets be open
For us to choose to use
Or closed to us like many want
Will we become pariahs
Made into lepers
Mocked despised ridiculed

Words wound us
Hate hurts us
Bullies batter us
Acid attacks us
Corrosive as corona

Who cares about trans

Trans Awareness Week, 13-19 November.

This week marks Trans Awareness Week, leading up to Trans Day of Remembrance on 20th November.

The week is a time to listen, learn and reflect and to stand with the trans community, who are so often vilified and marginalised simply for being who they are.

At BVLGBT+, we stand firmly beside our trans colleagues, friends, and community members. At a time when uncertainty and oppression persist, our commitment to solidarity, safety, and dignity for trans people is unwavering. We will continue to tell your stories and to represent and advocate for you where we can.

A massive congratulations to our own Dan Makin for being awarded a Fellowship by the RCVS for his contribution to the profession, particularly in EDI! 🥳🎉

“Not only is this a great privilege but it will help to serve as a strong platform for me to continue supporting and advocating for continued EDI development within the profession with particular focus on the LGBT+ community.

We had the most amazing time being a part of the Pride in London march this past weekend. We started the weekend off in style celebrating Pride and 10 years of the BVLGBT+ with on Friday evening and after a lovely brunch at headquarters on Saturday morning, we headed to Hyde park to take our place in the parade!

We couldn’t have been more proud to represent our profession at this world renowned event, and it was incredible to share these moments with friends old and new. 🥂🍾❤️

Join us for a vibrant and inclusive evening at the RVC Camden. To mark Pride month, the RVC will host the British Veterinary LGBT+ group for our 10th anniversary. This event is a fantastic opportunity for members of the LGBTQIA community and allies to connect, engage in insightful talks, and enjoy food and (soft) drinks together.

The event will include talks by the RVC and BVLGBT+ group, as well as by field biologist and wildlife filmmaker and TV presenter Dan O’Neill. These will be followed by a Q&A session and a food and (soft) drinks reception.
