Battersea Chess Club's Handicap Cup was presented to the club by Lieut S.F. Brittain-Smith on September 16, 1914.

That was a month after war was declared on Germany. Sidney Francis Brittain-Smith died in 1917 in the East Mediterranean.

Happy news to report from Surrey's Alexander Cup - Battersea through after a tight win over Surbiton. Battersea will now face either Coulsdon or Wimbledon in the quarter-finals.
