Most runners think endurance performance is just about mileage.
But performance is largely influenced by four key physiological factors:
• VO₂ max
• Lactate threshold
• Running economy
• Speed capacity
Understanding how these systems interact can help improve everything from 5 km performance to ultra-endurance racing.
One area I think many endurance athletes neglect is speed capacity and neuromuscular work. Improving top-end speed, stiffness, and running mechanics can often improve performance without simply adding more mileage.
