I spent the best part of the last six months of 2024 travelling whilst coaching internationally. During this time I have to confess although my training was fairly consistent my nutrition was not! Mainly because it was not possible to keep things on track whilst doing all the travelling and coaching that I did.

However now that things have settled down into 2025, I’m able to move myself into a consistent eating pattern. And that means I’m able to go into calorie surplus, and capitalise upon that to get the most out of my training, and boy has it been fun to hit some new numbers on the bar.
Calorie surplus can sometimes be misunderstood or even feared, so I wanted to map out what I’m doing every day in this article and also speak a little bit more about my thoughts around bulking.

From December 2024 to the end of February 2025 I’ve gained around 6kg. This is well paced weight gain around a couple of kilos/month, bringing me performance increases with minimal unwanted fat storage during the process.

Use the link below to see the full article on my daily intake of protein and meals.

It's been a great year!

I'm looking back on some of the many reps I got to see since becoming a Starting Strength coach in March 2022.
Here's a roundup of a good few of the lifters from across the UK who I've had the pleasure of helping with their lifts and starting their own strength journeys.

How much is possible in a 1:1 session?

Since March of 2022 the Starting Strength community has been coming to check in for 1:1 sessions with me.

They've travelled far and wide, and this story is from Mark who came down all the way from Blackpool to Surrey.

We covered:

–Squat, Press, Deadlift and Bench Press all coached and tuned up.
–Programming for progress - enough work to tide him over for 2-3 months.
–Nutritional planning for weight loss alongside strength improvements.

Read his update in the story above : )

Don't get stuck inside your own head.

About 50% of people that come to me for coaching got stuck before going anywhere near their gym over fears of embarrassment or risk.

Despite this; within 7 days I'll have them walking into their local gym to do their first solo workout, here's how:

During coaching I explain the 'why and how'.
Why we are training like this, and how to do it i.e where to send their mind/focus whilst training each lift.

A mind focussed on doing each step of training overcomes the mind that once lacked the why and how.
