It never fails to surprise me how being curious can lead to deep learning. I have struck gold.

With much of my research and coaching practice being centred around learning, motivation, life satisfaction, positive psychology and psychological well-being, I am continually reminded that approaching things with curiosity will tend to be a very positive experience and will almost always lead to new paths of enquiry and exciting new ways of doing things and my recent exploration of the power of metaphor is a tremendous example of the rewards of such open-mindedness.

❓ What is truly fascinating about exploring metaphor? 👇

For me, metaphors represent the stories that connect our current real-life experiences with experiences from the past. Metaphors help us to make sense of what is happening now and can support us in moving forwards into the, as yet, unknown of future. In time, I might argue, that this is a form of time travel.

One of the many great things about accessing, and working with, our personal metaphors is that our stories can be updated and augmented as our experiences are broadened, thus updating our narratives to the most current version possible. We are not necessarily attached to our metaphors, so potentially they are the most fluid part of our identity. And because they are so flexible, they have great power when we are looking to make a change in our life, they transport us from where we are now to where and who we want to be in the future.

Humans are meaning makers and metaphors are, in my opinion, the medium by which we can travel through time and make sense of where we have been and where we are going whilst connecting us firmly in the present. Personal metaphors enable us to glimpse into the future and even take the first step.

My own recent personal experience has been profound and I want to share it with you.

Motivation - Authenticity is the foundation of what keeps you true to living the life you strive for. It is the deep and meaningful measure that keeps you accountable and proves to you that you are on the right track. When it works for you in this way it has a very powerful impact. Authenticity is the fuel that drives motivation.

​In his historical paper, A Theory of Human Motivation, A. H. Maslow identifies “5 basic needs” (psychological, safety, belongingness & love, esteem and self-actualisation), each building on top of one another. Once the first two have been satisfied then we can begin to build a life for ourselves and in our own focussed formula for success, we see these as achieving a sense of belonging and love through improving personal relations with others, achieving esteem through conscientiousness, and self-actualisation through the achievement of aspirational outcomes. Motivation is what drives us forwards.

Positive Relations with Others is the key aspect of well-being included in the Focused Formula for Success taken from the structure of psychological well-being.

Conscientiousness is the key personality trait included in the Focused Formula for Success from the BIG5 and is described from a positive and proactive stance which can be summarised as a “will to achieve”. Someone who is high in conscientiousness has direction.
