Here is a NEW video with Aiki Ken. Ken Suburi is not just about swinging the sword—it is a constant quest for improvement and a deep inquiry into why we move the way we do.
In this video, I explore the essential principles that transform the sword from a tool into an instant extension of your body. We are looking at the 2nd Kumitachi, but the foundation lies in how we approach our Suburi practice.
Key Principles Covered:
Body Over Blade: Don't think about the cut or thrust first. Instead, focus on specific body shapes and movements. These are identical to Taijutsu techniques and are the secret to building strong Aikido.
The Core Connection: Power does not come from the arms or legs, but from the core. Whether you are static, moving forward, or retreating, that core engagement must remain constant.
Martial Validity: Always visualize an opponent trying to take your center. Keep your center line facing them, but crucially, work on stepping off the line. This is a vital martial aspect that should never be omitted.
Visualization: When you move, imagine you are moving as one structure.
If you focus only on the strike, you miss the discipline of footwork and posture. Master the body mechanic first, and the power will follow without the need for muscular strength.
Watch as I apply these core principles to the 2nd Kumitachi.
