Looking to build your resilience?

What are some of the ways you can develop resilience?

Developing resilience comes down to lots of factors including mental and physical strength, healthy daily practices, hormetic stressors and a strong sense of community. But if you’re looking to develop resilience, here’s something to reflect on today.

Can you think of a challenging time that you faced, where you thought perhaps you couldn’t cope? But in the end, you did cope and you came through it. Consider how you felt when it happened. When did that change? What did you do/learn to get through it?

Most of us are more resilient than we believe ourselves to be. We are very adaptable creatures and are capable of enduring challenges and change.

Sometimes it’s about reflecting on how we got through something and having trust and belief in our capabilities and coping mechanisms. And this is effective because it’s based on our own evidence - how we managed before.

Feeling Overwhelmed? Try the 'Minimal Effective Day' to balance performance, with recovery. Find out more below.

As we near the year-end rush, pressure is building—but pushing through isn’t always the answer. For anyone feeling overwhelmed, I suggest you try what I call the 'Minimal Effective Day'. It’s all about structuring a day that keeps you focused on the essential tasks, but one that strikes a balance between effort and recovery.

Here's how:

✅ Identify today’s must-dos
✅ Delegate where you can
✅ Match tasks to your energy levels
✅ Cut the non-essentials

Let’s finish the year strong, not burnt out. You can read more about the 'MED' here: https://leannespencer.co.uk/minimal-effective-day/

I know a lot of people stop and start with their habits, and I suspect this might be because we tend to overcomplicate things. This might help.

All the small (and big) things we do to stay well are simply a means to an end. Getting 7 hours + sleep isn't the endgame. Neither is doing 5 mins of breathwork before getting up, walking 10,000 steps a day or whatever other daily non-negotiable you have. These are simply things that will get you where you want to go.

An example: when I did my NNAS (navigational qualification), we learnt about the 5 Ds (destination, direction, distance, duration and description). Direction, distance, duration and description are all essential to getting to the destination, but you need to understand where you're heading before you do anything else.

The goal (or destination) for me is longevity, which I define as having strength, health, energy, mood and motivation into my old age. All the little things I do daily, weekly (or as needed) are simply a means to that end.

Why is this important? By having an eye on the endgame, we can view the daily habits as steps towards it. We don't need to beat ourselves up if we miss a daily step count or eat an unhealthy meal - stay focused on the endgame. Small changes have a big impact over time.

Why Self-Care is Essential, Not Selfish

We often feel guilty about taking time for ourselves, but self-care isn’t an indulgence—it’s a necessity. Whether you’re a leader, a parent, or managing multiple responsibilities, prioritising your own wellbeing is key to showing up at your best.

Think about it like this: you wouldn’t leave the house with your phone at 10% battery, expecting it to last the whole day. So why do we expect ourselves to function at peak performance without taking time to recharge?

In my latest blog, I dive into why self-care should be a non-negotiable part of your routine—free of guilt.

📖 Read more here 👉 https://buff.ly/3UaLd7E

The guilt trap we can fall into stems from the belief that taking time for ourselves is selfish. But the reality is self-care is essential.
