I teach the women in front of me.
Over the long summer I noticed lots of posts on Facebook and Instagram advertising exercise classes, programmes, challenges and work outs
And it struck me how little some of it took into account what was actually going on around us.
Because we were in the middle of a long heatwave.
Although the weather had changed dramatically, the classes, challenges and offers being advertised didn’t seem to change with it.
My classes kept running too, but what we did changed.
Because I teach the women who are actually in front of me.
My classes intentionally slowed down- using the heat to our advantage we worked on mobility and stretch. And stretching did not mean we were not working hard. We used long sustained movement to build strength and control.
Strength is not always about lifting weights.
Being able to control your body as you reach, bend, stretch and move is strength too.
My classes are designed by me.
I use the system I am trained in but I also use my background in dance, movement and teaching.
I am not tied to a set class that has to be delivered at a particular time or to a prescription that instructors elsewhere are also following.
I have the training and experience to know what needs to be done and how to achieve it.
That means I have the freedom to look at the women in front of me, consider the conditions and decide what is appropriate for them that day.
And that is important - especially when it’s 30 degrees outside!
So, I teach the women in front of me.
And if you know someone who might like that approach, please feel free to share this with them.
