It's really this simple... or is it?

If you're struggling with how to be authentic, and how to help people buy into you, then start with thinking about what matters to you. And what you're interested in.

Then expand out. Start listening more than talking. And engage with what is being said as part of a conversation rather than focusing on presenting your sales pitch.

Before a presentation, interview or meeting, your brain might stay calm, but your fingers give you away. Twisting a ring. Fiddling with a pen. Clasping too tightly...

A recent study called ‘The Influence of Beliefs & Expectations on Public Speaking Anxiety’ found that what people believe about themselves and their audience often shapes how nervous they feel. Those beliefs then influence how they behave: fidgeting, shaky hands, avoiding eye contact… and finally, how clearly their message comes across.

Some of the following beliefs sound familiar, don’t they?

‘They’re going to judge me.’

‘I’m not good at this.’

‘I’ll forget what I want to say.’

‘Everyone else sounds more confident than I do.’

In short, the nerves usually start long before the spotlight.

That’s where Brand Champion training make such a difference. They don’t just sharpen your message; they help you steady your energy and replace nervous habits with confidence cues.

Next time you catch yourself fidgeting before the spotlight, take a breath. That’s your signal to pause, reset, and refocus.

I have a bench, by a lake, not far from where I live, where I go for time out when I need it.

I listen to the birds and work through the overwhelm to determine what really is a priority and what isn't.

Taking a step a step back isn't wasting time
It's making sure I'm more efficient and focused on value for the long-term.

Don't rush in

It's the same when preparing for your next media interview, podcast or presentation.

1. Take the time to focus on why the topic sincerely matters to you.

2. Consider a story or example that's personal to you (because it means something on some level) that is linked to the topic.

3. Focus on what you really want to be heard. The one statement, fact or message that the audience needs to remember

These three elements become part of your
1. Introduction
2. Story in the middle
3. Ending
