Nobody tells you that motherhood isn’t just physically demanding. It’s keeping 47 tabs open in your mind at all times, while juggling mental tasks and the chaos of motherhood.
The laundry.
The appointments.
The meals.
The messages you forgot to reply to.
The 58 unread WhatsApps.
The snacks.
The nap maths.
The guilt.
The pressure to enjoy every second.
And somehow, while holding all of that, you’re also meant to be calm, present, grateful, patient, productive and still feel like yourself - and don’t forget to ‘bounce back’!
We talk about postpartum depression like it only happens inside a mother’s mind. But I do wonder how much of it is also about what’s happening around her.
The loneliness.
The lack of support.
The sleep deprivation.
The lack of community.
The invisible work no one sees.
Around 1 in 7 mums experience postpartum depression. And I can’t help but wonder how many more are walking around exhausted, overstimulated and under-supported, calling it “just motherhood” or just “being a mum”.
Maybe you’re not doing a bad job.
Maybe you’re just carrying too much.
