This week, our takes us on towards Auckland, New Zealand. We have currently reached Prague in the Czech Republic, which is due to host the European Judo Championships in November 2020 (having been rescheduled due to Covid-19).
Prague previously hosted the European Championships back in 1991, where 2 Scottish Judoka competed.
Loretta Cusack-Doyle took silver in the U52 category, losing out in the final to Jessica Gal of the Netherlands, while Billy Cusack took 5th place in the U71 category, losing to Magomedbek Aliev of the Soviet Union in the bronze medal match.
Billy went on to represent Great Britain in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, while former World, European and Commonwealth Champion Loretta won the European Championships a year later in Paris in 1992, an incredible 9 years after first winning the European Championships in 1983 (Genoa).
Both continue to be highly active in the judo world, as I’m sure everyone will know. Billy has coached at all levels including Olympic Games, and still coaches at Edinburgh Judo where he is the Director Of Coaching. Loretta is a board member of British Judo, and works for both the IJF and EJU, after a successful career both as a competitor and a coach.
Please continue to send in any distances you cover, whether walking, running, cycling or any other form of exercise.
Let’s see where we can get to next week!
