Murieston Reds 2 – 3 Musselburgh Windsor 2012 🔴
We could not be more proud of the girls' performance tonight. 👏👏
There are no easy games in the Joelle Murray League, and our third match in six days was no exception.
Tonight we faced an older and very talented Musselburgh 2012 side, and from the first whistle to the last the girls went toe-to-toe with them.
In truth, we felt Murieston had the better of the game for long periods and were extremely unfortunate not to take at least something from it.
A demanding run of fixtures has brought a few injuries, and we had to ask a number of girls to step into slightly unfamiliar roles. The way they adapted and embraced those challenges was outstanding.
Although the result didn't go our way, the coaches genuinely feel this was probably the strongest all-round performance the girls have produced to date and a massive platform to build on moving forward.
Tonight wasn't just about being compact and difficult to break down out of possession. When we won the ball, our transitions were rapid, our combinations were slick, and we caused our opponents problems throughout the game.
The first half was particularly impressive. We felt we controlled large spells of the match and were rewarded when Summer produced a wonder strike from a wide position to give the Reds a deserved lead. We continued to create chances and felt a bigger scoreline would have been a fair reflection of the play.
The second half again started well, but Musselburgh definitely stepped up their play and, unfortunately, we switched off on a couple of occasions and conceded two weak goals.
However, we continued to press and attack and then, unfortunately, a bit of a stramash ended in Musselburgh getting a third.
This one was a sore one to take, as we think everyone at the game (on both sides) were stunned that a goal was awarded and not a free kick.
The girls refused to give in. A brilliant run from Aria resulted in a late challenge inside the penalty area, and Maya confidently converted the penalty to bring us back within one goal.
From there, Murieston pushed relentlessly for an equaliser right until the final whistle and came agonisingly close on more than one occasion, but unfortunately it wasn't to be.
Despite the defeat, there is so much for the girls to take from this performance. The effort, quality, resilience and belief they showed throughout the game was outstanding.
There were a number of excellent performances across the pitch tonight, but the coaches felt that Aria deserved special recognition, producing an outstanding display to earn Player of the Match. 👏
We thank Musselburgh for making the trip and contributing to what was a fantastic advert for the girls' game, and we wish them every success for the remainder of the season. 🔴⚽
