What a way for the club to finish off a wonderful few days with the football teams from France spending the day travelling along the North Coast, having a meal in the Causeway Hotel and then a walk down to the Giant's Causeway.

The Hillsborough Cup.
What a wonderful day we had at Lisburn Leisureplex with six teams taking part, 2 from Hillsborough, 2 from France a team from Newtownards and a team from Carrickfergus/Larne.
Matches were played in a great spirit with some matches decided on a knife edge. The team from Newtownards were worthy winners of the overall tournament and the French A team were runners up.
The Lady Mayor came to the event and during the post- match meal she welcomed all the players, referees and representatives to the Borough and handed out the cup and the medals. Afterwards, Gary McKeown from Hillsborough Walking Football Club presented her with a cheque of £300 to go towards the funds she's raising to purchase breast cancer screening services.

Vive le walking football

Walking football goes international later this month, with a competition in Lisburn featuring two teams from France.

The event will take place on Saturday March 21 at Lisburn Leisureplex's outdoor pitches

It is being hosted by local side Hillsborough Walking Football Club (HWFC) and will also involve teams from different parts of NI.

The two French teams taking part are from the city of Lyon.

Gary McKeown from HWFC said: "We met up with them through playing for NI in a tournament in Sweden.

"We are absolutely delighted that they are able to make the trip over for the Hillsborough Cup competition and hope to be able to make a return visit to France ourselves.

"Walking football is growing all the time in NI and hosting a competition with an international theme will help take it to a new level."

Walking football is for men and women over 50. HWFC runs up to four sessions a week – on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and Thursday and Sunday evenings.

Last May, it hosted a visit by Health Minister Mike Nesbitt, who stressed the importance of all ages staying active.

In December, it was invited to a Lisburn and Castlereagh Mayor's reception in recognition of winning the IFA National Cup.

The club is always keen to welcome new members. Anyone interested can contact Gary on 07879 297771.
