“Tell me something about yourself”… what I’m really listening for
When it comes to interviews, especially in Health & Social Care, this question is deeper than people realise.
Whether you’re applying to be a Manager, Nurse, HR Advisor, Chef, Cleaner or Administrator — yes, we look at your qualifications, experience and skills.
But that’s not all.
In our sector, your lived experiences matter just as much.
I pay attention to qualities like:
✨ Compassion
✨ Empathy
✨ How you empower others
✨ How you advocate
✨ How you handle stressful or emotional moments
✨ And the heart behind why you do what you do
As a GM and Commissioning Leader, I’m passionate about building strong teams that deliver excellent customer experience and outstanding care.
When I ask, “Tell me about yourself,” I’m not looking for a polished script.
I’m looking for the person behind the CV.
Because many people may have the same qualifications…
but nobody else has your story.
