Match Report - Rothwell Reds V Methley Lionesses.D1 π΄
A Game that has been in the calendar a while and an opportunity for the Reds to further test themselves against on of the strongest teams in the West Riding leagues.
As fate would have it the Reds had 10 girls for this one with sickness, holidays and Kyla on County Duty. A slight reshuffle had Belle dropping into fullback to help the team.
The pre match was about attitude, positivity and mental preparation. Almost nothing on gameplay or tactics.
The Reds had to just believe in their collective team efforts and not let league tables or individual quality of the opposition impact what they did.
Positive attacking play and winning individual battles was the order of the day.
As expected Methley were very good on the ball moving it around quickly and accurately. The Reds defence stayed disciplined and didn't allow themselves to be dragged out of positions.
Methley scored a Great first goal from just inside the box with a powerful shot that Sophia got a hand to but couldn't keep out.
The first test was attitude, would the girls go into their shell or come back fighting. Fortunately it didn't get the Reds down and they carried on battling creating a few good opportunities and Freya in the Methley net making some solid routine saves.
Half time came and I couldn't be happier. Again mindset, positivity and belief.
Soon after the restart Methley continued to have good control adding a second with a good run and finish.
Looking at the girls they were again not phased by the goal and started to push and get a bit of control within the game.
The defence of Belle, April and Ivy fought, passed the ball wide to relive pressure and communicated well.
Sophia in goal had plenty to do but once again showed Great kicking ability.
Millie just bounded on running and closing down. Niah was using her strength and started pushing the girls forward and Sophie and Lexi began skipping down the wings.
India had a Great spell wide and Ava cake back into the game chasing everything.
The hard work paid off with Millie winning the ball and riding a tackle to pass the ball neatly into the bottom corner from just inside the corner of the box. Much to her own surprise!
Methley and Rothwell were having a good go and vicious corners from both sides almost ended in the back of the net, with both keepers getting fine touches to keep the ball out.
The persistence paid off for the Reds with Sophie galloping wide right to send in a low hard cross with Ava where she always is, inside the box to finish from close range.
The score was not the focus, we are trying to find our true level in grassroots football and what we can work on to be better as a collective and individuals.
I can't be more proud of the attitude, work rate and teamwork from this fantastic set of Girls.
Thank You to Methley for the opportunity to host the LEW derby. What a cracking set of girls they have and some vital lessons learned from playing a team of that quality.
πOpposition player went to Sophia. Very good today with a string of good saves and solid handling and distribution. A much more confident and improved goalkeeper, and her goalkeeping coach is ........Gav from Methley β€οΈ
π Niah collected coach's player for her leadership as captain and continuous positive play driving the girls on, keeping the positive vibes on field with a solid all round midfield performance
Reds, This season you have all been truly remarkable. West End from Div 2 Next Saturday then a final league game against Battyeford.
