On paper a tough looking away fixture against a resilient Drig team, last seasons fixtures were really close games so we knew what to expect and it proved to be the case.
We dominated field position and possession in the first half and looked really strong. We limited them to a few breakaway opportunities with Harrison in goal needing to be alert to the threat, against the run of play he made some important one on one saves. In hindsight we should have capitalized on this more than we did. We deserved to be two or 3 up at half time on the balance of play but had to settle for a slender 1-0 lead at break with Kirky being in the right place at the right time to convert from a goalkeeper error.
Drig came out firing in the second half and had some field position, they got their reward by winning a pen, which should have been preventable from our point of view, we’ll learn that lesson and make sure it doesn’t happen next time.
Both teams had opportunities to sneak the win in the end but neither could manage to produce the killer blow and quality shot.
We had some good performances out there, the pitch was heavy and for sure would have sapped our energy but we are proud of the lads working hard until the end and not losing it because of fitness.
The stand out performer of the day we felt was Lucas, he worked his socks off making endless tackles, breaking up their attacks and protecting our defense. His choice of tackling and defending was spot on, going to ground when needed and staying on his feet when required. Well done to him.
Points to work on in training will be composure and creating shooting opportunities against a compact defense
On reflection, a point away to Drig is a decent result.
