Junior match reports
Altofts U11s away @ East Ardsley - Monday 15th June
Unfortunately, before the game, Freddie was in A&E, so last-minute recruit Jack came into the team.
Captain Jacob lost the toss, and East Ardsley put us in to bat first.
The first pair were Jack and Vinny. Jack scored 8 runs and hit a good boundary, while Vinny lost his wicket but played some good shots and ran well between the wickets.
The next pair were Kian and Jacob. Kian scored 3 runs, showing some good defensive blocks and running singles well. Jacob scored 6 runs, including a boundary.
William P scored 4 runs and communicated well with his partner, Jude, who also batted well.
Last up were Ronnie and George. Ronnie scored 6 runs. Although he lost his wicket, he did well to get back into positive numbers. George was the top scorer with 12 runs, hitting a boundary and taking some very good singles.
Finally, Albie came in and finished the innings with some good defensive shots and well-run singles.
As a team, we ran really well between the wickets, picking up lots of singles, which helped our score significantly.
With the ball, Jack, Jude and George each took 2 wickets. William P, Kian and Ronnie took 1 wicket each. There was also a good run-out involving George and Jude took an excellent catch off his own bowling.
We gave away a few extras through some unnecessary wides, but overall it was an excellent performance. There was some very good fielding from everyone, and Albie and Vinny made some important stops to prevent extra runs.
This result puts us 2nd in the league.
U15s away @ Morley - Monday 15th June
After arriving after a battle down the M62, the boys were tasked with an improvement to their batting, especially the running between the wickets.
Henry won the toss and chose to bat first on a very good looking wicket and best use of the fading evening light.
A slight change to the batting order saw Scott promoted to opening and along with Henry they got us off to a flyer, the ball disappearing to the boundary often against what I believe to be the best bowling attack we have faced so far. Henry was the first to fall from a good delivery that just clipped the top of off stump. Will Gantham joined Scott at the crease and the flow of runs was not altered by the fall of the previous wicket with both batters going on the counter attack. Will was the next wicket to fall leaving the score on 40-2. The Morley boys re-grouped and fought back well, stemming the run flow and picking up wickets more regular picking up Jack O'Malley and Jayden Darbyshire with the score on 49-4. Scott carried on with his attacking batting before falling for 28 and a good little partnership with Will Upton. With Morley now targeting in on cleaning up, and claiming the wickets of Will, Zyler and Dexter, the last pair of Harley and Billy stood tall, adding valuable runs and much more positively seeing out the full 20 overs. Altofts finished on a much improved 97-9.
After a quick turn around we took to the field, Jayden taking the new ball was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4 over 2-15. Unfortunately the rest of the innings was blown away from us by some very good and very aggressive batting from the Morley number 2 and number 3 both with strike rates above 150 and the score was chased down in the 11th over.
Credit to both teams as the game was played in great spirits.
U13s @ home to West Bretton - Wednesday 17th June
Following a hat-trick of league wins, we welcomed an in-form West Bretton to the club, hoping to make it four victories on the bounce.
Our captain, Billy Bryant, finally won the toss and stuck to our plan, putting the visitors in to bat in the hopes of restricting them to a chasable total.
Jayden Darbyshire and Seth Camm opened the bowling. Despite a tidy spell from Jayden, West Bretton got off to a strong start. One opener retired unbeaten on 27 before Noah Jenkinson claimed the other thanks to a sharp low catch from Luke Rigby, making it 52-1.
Harley Roebuck entered the attack, dismissing the next batter after a good catch from Noah Stogden to make it 72-2. Some really tight bowling from our youngsters, Viv Meisuria and Zak Jordan, saw both take a wicket each, reducing West Bretton to 101-4. Our two senior players, Will Upton and Noah Stogden, bowled the final four overs, with Will picking up the last wicket as the visitors closed on 110-5.
We returned to our usual opening pair of Jayden and Noah S. A slow start saw us on just 11 runs after the first four overs, thanks to some excellent opening bowling from Bretton. However, Jayden then went on the attack, smashing four consecutive fours to lift the run rate.
Noah S was out for 7, making it 35-1, before Jayden retired unbeaten on 25 after another excellent knock. This brought Dexter Robinson and Will to the crease. However, Will wasnโt able to repeat last weekโs heroics leaving for a first ball duck and 38-2.
Harley was in next and rotated the strike well with Dexter, before the latter was caught for 7, leaving us 56-3. Skipper Billy joined Harley and they ran brilliantly, punishing the bad balls, before Harley was dismissed for a well-constructed 22.
A 34-run partnership brought us to within touching distance of victory at 90-4. However, that soon became 92-5 when Billy went for one shot too many, departing for a well-worked 14. With Altofts still needing 14 from three overs, the match was finely poised.
Luke and Seth were tasked with seeing us home. They kept the scoreboard ticking, and Luke struck two lovely fours before a disastrous run-out saw Seth depart, leaving us 104-6. Noah J joined Luke with 7 needed off the final two overs. Just as victory looked certain, Coach Craig gave Luke out LBW, leaving us 106-7.
Young Viv strode to the middle and managed two valuable singles from his first two balls, leaving us needing just three runs from the last five deliveries. With nerves jangling and the crowd on edge, Noah J missed the next three balls. Just as it seemed victory was slipping away, Noah J pulled out a leg-side hoick and sent the ball to the boundary for a dramatic win and rapturous celebrations. 112-7, victory secured with just one ball to spare.
An excellent all-round performance from the boys, who followed their coaches' pre-match instructions to stay in the game once the Bretton openers had gone. We bowled tightly to restrict the visitors to 110, with six bowlers each going for fewer than four runs an over and the wickets well shared. Special mention to Viv and Zak, who came on at a difficult time and bowled superbly under pressure.
Jayden and Noah S gave us a solid foundation for the chase, with Jayden retiring unbeaten once again. Excellent support came from the rest, particularly Harley, Billy and Luke, all of whom rotated the strike well. Despite a nervy finish, it was brilliant to see a smiling Noah J smash the winning boundary.
Commiserations to West Bretton, who played their part in an excellent game in front of a huge crowd. It was a fantastic advert for the game of cricket. Our victory against a well-established side was particularly sweet, showing how far we have come and making it four wins in a row to cement our fourth place in the table. Another tough fixture awaits next week as we welcome Wrenthorpe.
U11s Away @ Wakefield St Michael's - Thursday 18th June
Captain Alex lost the toss, and they sent us out to field first.
There were some good opening overs from Freddie and William P, which put them under pressure. However, when their stronger batters got going, they were very good. Wickets came from Freddie (2), Lucas, and Alex R. There were also some good overs from William S and Alex K.
It was a tough day in the office for George and Hudson, but they both tried hard and contributed with some good fielding.
The first batting pair were Hudson (9) and Alex R (7), who both batted well, picking up runs and protecting their wickets. Next came Alex K (11) and Lucas (5). This was their best batting performance of the year so far, with both showing good running between the wickets and some excellent work with the bat.
William P scored 4 and tried hard but never really got going. George also had a difficult day and lost his wickets, but he will come back stronger.
Ben
The final pair were Freddie, who top-scored with 13, and William S with 9. The coach told them to go out swinging, which they certainly did. They deserved more runs as they hit the ball to the boundary on several occasions. There were some big hits from both Freddie and William, and they gave it a really good go.
A special shout-out goes to William Perry, who never stopped fielding. He threw himself at the ball all game and saved four boundaries with some outstanding effort.
Overall, a good effort from the team with plenty of positives to take into the next game.
